constant high rpm's?

This may seem like a newb question, and it partially is.

But the RX-7, one of the advantages is that you can shift at a abnormal high RPM range, but what about constant speed driving?

Is it better to shift high, and then when you achieve the speed you're going for like 5 miles, shift up again so you aren't constantly stressing it? Or is it fine to keep it at like 4 or 5k or so for those miles?

This is something I've been wondering about for a while, finally bothering to ask.

Typically, your secondaries are going to kick in at around 4K, so if you drive at 4-5K, your gas mileage is going to suffer.

Best gas mileage - shift into the highest gear that can sustain the speed you want

I'd shift before 3.8k if you want to save gas.

I agree with the shifting low, that is what i do but i also have woundered about the Rotary's high-rpm lasting ability's.

Will they last with lots of high-rpm's?

I ask because i am used to big V8's which would just blow-up over 5000 - 6000rpm. So going to redline at 7000+ just seems like a death wish.

Dude, our cars generally redline around 8k.

EDIT: lol even then, you can take them *PAST* that with balancing, better seals, and unicorn magic.

LOL, well the redline STARTS at 7k on my car, from experience with bent valves on one of my other engines i never take an engine past redline and try to stay a long way from redline especially on old engines. Much less go to the end of the tach.

so the thought of being able to rev tot he end of the tach without harm is a foreign concept to me. Though with no valves i there is not as much to get hurt, still...

Well I know that gas mileage will be better below 4k, but - what about engine health? Does that strain the engine at all if you keep it at 4k or higher? Or will the only consequence be that lower MPG?

well if you think about it , the engine is making more rotations at a higher rpm, gnerally meaning more wear. not always true, but its a general concept.
