Consequences of removing EGR

alrighty. Well as some may know, my TII has a pretty big vac leak at the EGR valve. Instead of forking over $$$ to mazda for a new one that im prolly gonna ditch anyway, I was thinking about just buying/making an EGR valve blockoff. If i left the ACV in place would that make any diff. i dont want to pull ALL the emisions right now, just the EGR valve.

Anyone have input?
Thanks

Unless the egr valve is stuck open, there is no need to physically remove it. Under normal operation, it is closed. When vacuum is applied (I think has to be above 2,000 rpm), the diaphragm opens the valve. The egr vacuum is controlled by egr solenoid valve (it's 1 of those colored solenoid valves on top of engine). So, if you just disconnect the plug at the solenoid valve, no vacuum will ever go to the egr valve itself. You could also plug the vacuum line that goes into the solenoid valve but that's unnecessary (unless the egr solenoid valve itself is not functioning properly).

The above is for a s4 na, but that should hold for all types.

You don't need the egr valve right? Where exactly is it? Any pics?

On the '87-88 turbos, the EGR valve is on the back side of the lower intake manifold. It's really easiest to get to from under the car.

I typically block 'em off - doesn't really seem to make a difference in power or driveability, but it is one less thing to go wrong.

well, i was on the fc3s-pro website and looking under the troubleshooting parts on the EGR valve. I have a vaccuum leak right there and Ted's website suggested that it can cause all kinds of nasty problems.

Ryde: Its on the back passenger's side corner of the engine block. Its a circular metal looking thing.

If you have a vacuum leak there ,just take the EGR off and put ablanking plate there(don,t forget to block the vacuum pipe). There are no adverse consequences except for a possible slight increase in NO emissions under some conditions. You will still be able to an emissions test in Texas.Note EGR valves were deleted from 3rd gen TT engines in 94 or 95.

None of the S5 motors had EGR.

You're right. I apologize. EGR questions seem to be a daily thing around here and so I assumed that the answer MUST be sitting around somewhere, so I fired off my trap without checking for myself first...

I took off the egr along with bac. doesnt it make your car run rich tho? i mean after i took all that **** off i waste hella more gas. EGR=exhuast gas recirculating valve right? so if the exhuast gas isnt being circulated u are dumping out more raw fuel out of ur exhuast, therefore wasting more gas or running rich, right? correct me if i'm wrong.

You should not be using extra fuel by blocking the egr valve . the thing puts exhaust in to the intake track , no one needs that .If everthing is correct and you block it off you will never know it is gone, if left on it puts black crap into the intake track bad -bad
