1987 is the first production year for TIIs in North America. My 87 doesn't have AAS or all wheel steering. Run the VIN from the vehicle. Might be a TII swap, which would be good to know. Does the car even have an intercooler under the hood?

Yes, the TII's made late in 86 were sold as "87" models in the US.
The DTSS is sometimes called "all wheel steering" so as not to confuse nubies, even though that terminology isn't exactly correct. The DTSS came on all 86-92 RX-7 models, and you can read more about it here:
http://www.aaroncake.net/RX-7/brochu...e.asp?Number=8
The AAS (Automatic Adjusting Suspension) only came on the US GXL models. If that TII has AAS, then it is a Japanese model (will have right-hand steering), is a GXL converted to a TII, or is a TII with GXL suspension added by a former owner. Anyway, the AAS really doesn't do much good, so don't worry if the car doesn't have it. Actually, it's probably better if the car doesn't have the AAS.
BTW, the car IS a TII, right? It should have a hood scoop, and "Turbo II" written on the car behind the front wheels. Also, the first few digits of the VIN should be JM1FC332. The 2 means turbo. If it is a 1, then it was originally a non-turbo car. Also, a few digits later in the VIN there is a letter. If it's a G, then it was made in 1986.
Can you take some pictures and post them here?
BTW, here is a TII buyer's guide:
