cone intake on ebay - any good?
saw this intake kit on ebay (http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eb...386345&r=0&t=0)
how's this look compared to those of you with intake's already? does it look like it's got all the hardware to install (doesn't look like it comes with much in the picture).
thanks!

I'd be wary of their claims...
They mention "billet aluminum" adapter, but this is only needed for the 1986-1988 Zenki FC's; the 1989-1991 Kouki FC's can just clamp the filter on the AFM.  Why would the price be the same?!?!?  I sell both an HKS AFM adapter and a generic aluminum adapter, and the cost of one of these is between $15 - $25 easy!  The HKS AFM is cast aluminum while the generic is welded aluminum tube and sheet.  If the adapter is truly "billet aluminum", it would cost at LEAST $50 each to produce in low run quantities.  Having no picture of this "billet aluminum" adapter makes me even more suspicious...
5hp gain?  That's a bunch of bullshit.  Air filter swaps barely get 1-2hp gains on the dyno.  I'd like to know under what test conditions they ran this gain with to begin with.  Beware of people touting hp gains with no dyno sheets or details...

I bought this exact intake from this guy. It is not a billet adapter. It's just an aluminum adapter, but a billet adapter wouldn't do anything special anyway. It comes with the adapter(which fits perfectly), a K&N Cone(yes it's real), a hose clamp, and some various screws. It fits perfectly, but doesn't come with any mounting hardware. I just used one of the stock air box mounting brackets in a creative fashion to mount the filter where it needs to be. That was the only negative, but it only took about 5 minutes to come up with a way to mount it.
But, you should also be prepared to build a cold air box. I noticed a slight increase when the weather is cold, and a significant decrease when it's hot outside. Our enging bays get pretty hot, and the factory intake is a cold air intake. You will lose power when it's hot if you don't isolate the intake from the engine bay.
I actually removed this intake last weekend for an autocross, because I was competing stock. I will not reinstall in until I build a cold air box. The stock box works better right now, because it's starting to get real hot here in Texas.

i was at this stereo store, and god...well i asked this guy what kind of engine mods do you have done to this focus? he's like...well we have the Cold air induction kit, trying to make it sound like it's from space or something, and he said that it was the only mod done to the car because it made15 extra horsepower, i said...oh yeah cool
knowing in my mind that this guy was full of total bullshit, or just very uneducated about cars. It it's only 1-2 hp gain why spend that much money on it???

On a turbo motor it might make more than 5hp due to increase boost.
On an NA, typical gains are more like 1-2hp.  15hp on an NA Sciracco is just plain impossible.
1-2hp gains for $30-$50 is not that bad.  K&N is famous for using this analogy.  Name something else that will gain you this much power with the car currently running in top condition?

If it's an adapter and KN cone filter, that's not a bad price.  The aluminum adapter is at least $15, and the K&N is at least $40 at retail prices...
I'd still ream him for claiming it's a "billet" adapter though...

thanks everyone for your input!
anyone wanna guestimate if i'll feel a noticeable improvement with a ported n/a motor?
my car's currently got the drop in k&n filter and I was thinking of finding a junkyard airbox lid and cutting out most of the lid to let the filter suck in more air.
any comments on that frankenstien idea?
