Cone Filter Intake

got sort of a problem goin on here. I have not had my 7 very long and am finally getting around to doing a cone filter intake. It is a 1990, I am using an AIC Cone Filter on the stock hose that goes from the old air box to the Throttle Body. I put the new filter on and whent for a rip, but for some reason it was idling TERRIBLE, sounded like the engine was blown or something. And after a very short distance it would stop generating any HP at all and just coast, even with the pedal to the floor, would not even rev up. So lucky me, I still had the stock airbox in the car with me, so I switched em back and now it runs perfectly again. Anyone got any ideas on why this is happening?

you probably disconnected a vaccuum line...put the cone back on and 1. make sure you connect all the lines, and 2. make sure you have the AFM connected! (the AFM is the electronic part between what was your airbox, and the crappy rubber piping...it is made of hard plastic and has a connector on the side of it)

ok, yes both of those are disconnected. Bad part is that the cone I got is way to big to attach onto the AFM. Is there a way to do it without the AFM in there? I had also tried doing it with the AFM still electronically connected but not connected to the pipe. Car would not even start and then got a badass backfire, loudest I have ever heard, was also in an underground parking lot at the time so that did not help. Hooked up the old stock airbox with the AFM in there and gonna leave it like that for now, runs perfectly with that still in there.
Thanks for info.

go to www.nopionline.com, sounds like you're new at this and they have good resources for bolt on kits designed for the car. there should be a K&N kit w/ adapter and brackets, an HKS kit, and someone makes a tube style intake for yur year as well.

Take out the airbox, leave on the AFM, and get out a tape measure. See how much room you have for a cone filter. I think you can fit like an eight inch long cone in there. The diameter needs to be about 2.5" or 2.75".

Now go to your local performance shop and take the tape measure with you. As far as brand, I'd go with K&N.

Also, the AFM needs to be there, it HAS to monitor the intake flow for the ECU. Otherwise, you get what happened to you.

If you cant find a cone filter that fits, simply buy one. Then go to home depot or something and get a silicon reducer.
