I'm not clear, is that a Series 5 AFM? If so, no adaptor needed, just clamp the filter on the AFM.

1) Unclamp the cone filter from the rest of the "adapter" that you just bought.
2) Go to your car, open the hood, and remove the stock air box (just the rectangular top and bottom plastic pieces and the old filter).
3) You will now see a round pipe with a cylinder thing at the end of it which has some wires coming out of it. The cylinder thing is the airflow meter (AFM), and your car will not run without it, so be careful with it. Clamp the cone filter onto the AFM. You may want to make a bracket or something to keep the AFM from flopping around in the engine bay.
4) Note that there is now a hose with nothing to attach to (looks kinda like a small radiator hose). This goes to your air pump, which lets your car pass emissions testing, and also helps supress the "backfiring" noise made when decelerating in gear. If you want your $900 air pump to last a while, then go to your local auto parts store and get a "crankcase" filter and clamp to fit this hose. If you don't care about your air pump, then you can remove it, or simply leave the hose alone.

If this is the case, then the AFM isn't too small, your cone filter is too big.

Measure your AFM, and either go to your local auto parts store and get the correct size cone filter, or order one online. Be sure to get one that isn't too long, or it won't fit. I recommend the K&N brand universal cone filters, which are about $20-30, and last 10 years or 1,000,000 miles.

you bought a kit for an 86-88... comes with a bracket and 3" filter. what you need for the 89-91 is just a filter with a 2.5 or 2.75" hole. no adapter needed.
