Compression test without the engine in the car??

Is there anyway to check if the engine is good if I cant connect a battery to it? This particular engine is sitting in a junkyard and i am not allow to fire up the car. What can i do?

Turn it by hand and verify it has compression on all faces?

yeah thats about all you can do.. pull the plugs and slap a 19mm wrench into the front pulley bolts and crank her over.

they may be reading deficient but im definetly writing deficient....I cant slap a battery to it

Without a starter to turn the engine over, you'll get 0psi on all 6 faces with a compression gauge - unless you're Superman, you can't turn it over fast enough to get compression.

If you pull the plugs & turn it over, you should get even chuffs every 180 degrees of eshaft rotation as you turn it over. That's about the best you can do.

Regardless, you might want to treat it as a core engine, and pull it apart before trying to do much with it. If the intake/exhaust are still fully attached & the car is wrecked, then it might be OK to use as-is, but if the car is in good shape, chances are good that either the engine or transmission is responsible for it being there.

I've found that a motor can make 'strong sounding' puffs as low as 40psi! Be Careful!

Yes, I agree that a low compression motor will still make puffs, but at least turning it by hand you can make sure all the apex seals intact.

Would doing something like a leakdown test show the condition of the seals internally?

you can get compression just hand turning it. But like they said it only proves you have intact seals not that you have a good motor

Intact seals would be good enough for me to pick up a junker, general would imply there's some useful hard parts.
