Compression Test checklist...

Can someone post a list of what I need to buy at Autozone to do a compression test? I have a Haynes Manual, but some "how-to" tips would be helpful. I also need to know what numbers I should be seeing. I'm sure many of us can benefit from the info.

My car seized last September and it's been sitting in my driveway ever since. I've never done a compression test on it and I always have this thought in the back of my mind that maybe a seal is just stuck with carbon and all I need to do is soak it with ATF for like a week. I only soaked it overnight last time to get the engine unseized. I never did the compression test because I felt I was "beating a dead horse" so to speak. The car runs right now but it's very sluggish, loud, and can't idle after warmup.

hahah, I need closure.

Thanks in Advance!

All you need is a compression tester. You put it in the leading plug hole, pull the EGI fuse, and have someone crank the engine over while holding at WOT. There are 2 tests, one will check the totasl compression held by the engine, and the other you will hole the vavle on the tester open and check for 3 even bounces. I believe anything under 70 psi is a lost cause, and the total compression held should be atleast 90psi. Those are rough figures though... One low bounce indicates a blown oil seal, 2 low bounces is an apex...Hope this helped....

Not to be a lil bitch, but if you lost 1 apex seal, wouldn't that mean you wouldn't get compression in 2 chambers? So you'd only be seeing 1 bounce?

Sorry, let me clarify. In the case you lost 1 apex seal you would see 1 high bounce, and 2 low (if any) bounces.
