compression check issues

All righty.

I got myself a little $25 compression checker from Advanced Auto Parts yesterday and did a compression check today. I'm not sure if I'm doing it right, though.

I started the engine, let it warm to normal temperature, shut it off, took out the trailing plugs, took out the egi fuse, and had my dad crank it (with the gas pedal down to the floor). When I held the side release valve down, I was only getting even bounces between 25 and 30 for both front and rear rotor, but when i didn't hold the release valve down, it bounced itself up to 70 on the rear and 90 on the front.

The engine doesn't really have too many problems running, it generally seems to idle correctly, doesn't seem to have a *major* lack of power, so it's hard to believe that i've been running on 25-25-25 rear and 30-30-30 front.

87 TII engine. odometer says 197,000, and we believe it to be the original engine. I'm swapping it from one TII into another, so I'm planning on doing a rebuild, as well. I'm just wondering what I've done wrong so I can correct it for future checks.

Any ideas what I could have messed up during the check?

Patrick
