Complete Racing Beat setup question

Complete Racing Beat setup question

I'm considering investing in a complete racing beat exhaust system for my 86' N/A.. Header - presilencer - RB Catback (duals) .. But I have a couple of questions:

1) Is this setup recommended, and will I be satisfied with it?

and 2) I'm a little confused with the header install - Am I supposed to rig it to the air pump or something for actuator activation? I'm just looking at the picture of it.. and im confused as to what the little valve on it is.. :P
I'm not a gear head.. But i'm sure i can handle little bolt on operations..

I also plan on getting an Intake of some sort.. should I get the intake before the exhaust? or vice versa?

Oh another thing - I heard rumours that the RB header was more for Carb'd 7's? and that it's more beneficial to get a replacement hi flo cat? is there any truth to this?

Before we can answer the question we need to know if it's the collected system or the road race system.

For intake: Buy one whenever you can, make sure to get a fenderwell intake or a cold air box for any real gains.

Carb'd RX's is just what RB says. Carbs offer alot of gain for little money but a properly tuned (SAFC-even) RX will make more with better throttle response and mileage.

High FLo cat really won't restrict alot on an NA, but the only one that mates up to the RB header (that is in production and has good reviews) is the Bonez unit. Either the Bonez unit or the Presilencer would be fine on a stock ported engine. But gains have been found with larger diameter exhausts.

Search for Kahren Stock Port.

I have the RB headers + the Bonez high flow cat on my stock back half and i think that it is considerably better all the way around.

- also does anyone know if the exhaust set up would be louder with the full RB set up vs the stock back half?

I had the full setup on my 88SE and man was it obnoxiously loud! I mean everyone knew you were coming and my wife could hear me coming down the road over 6-8 blocks away. I hate to say this but I always got dirty looks from pedestrians and some kids used to block thier ears when I drove by.

I loved it though

^Uhh...Maybe you had an exhaust leak somewhere.

I have the full RB system and it sounds great. Above 3500 or so is really the only time it is loud enough to draw attention. The presilencer doesn't do **** in terms of quieting things, but it does have the pick up tube for the 5th and 6th port actuators, which is a plus, and does work. The mufflers are what really keep it relatively quiet.

The install is very simple. The only thing you will have to do is extend the O2 sensor wire to fit in the bung at the end of the header, if it's collected.

I'd suggest taking off the intake and 5th and 6th port actuators for the header install, just to get to the header nuts/studs a little easier. The rest is self explanatory. Bolt it where it looks like it should bolt, you'll find holes on the chassis of your car for **** to bolt to.

"The 1986-92 13B 6-port engines, in stock form with the factory fuel injection, produces similar power gains with either our Header/Presilencer combo or our Cat Replacement Pipe (Downpipe) /Presilencer combination. If you have no intentions of installing our Holley intake System (or any other aftermarket carb setup), we recommend the use of the Cat Replacement Pipe (Downpipe) /Presilencer combo since it offers a slightly quieter exhaust note, is easier to install and is less costly. If you are intending to upgrade the intake or fuel injection system, the Header/Presilencer combo offers the greatest performance potential."


I have a N/A as well, but, I'm having trouble deciding between purchasing the header or the downpipe. I've heard many times that HEADER = N/A, DOWNPIPE = TURBO

Should I listen to Racing Beat or the crowd?

The "downpipe" from Racing Beat is a cat replacement pipe that bolts to the stock exhaust manifold, then bolts to the RB presilencer, which can bolt up to the stock Cat-Back, or the RB Cat-Back.

Get the header.

I installed it brand new at the muffler shop and we checked for exhaust leaks prior to taking it on the road. I then sold the car several months later. It was loud as heck.

That sucks man, sorry to hear that. I got my system used, pieced it together over the course of a year, and I don't have any leaks, and it is not too loud.

Weird.
