Common Coolant Leak Places

88 SE

First of all, my old filler cap started leaking, and I couldn't find another cap at autozone that would fit, so I put my old RADIATOR cap in place of it. Who this matter? It seemed to fix the leak, so I think it seals fine.

To the problem: I'll loosing coolant. I need to fill the overflow tank up about once every 1.5 - 2 weeks. But I can't find the freaking leak. WHen I'm at a stop and take off, I smell coolant. I pull the car over, open the hood, and find nothing, but I can still smell it. I see no leaks on the ground at all.

I already replaced the heater hose that goes from the engine to the core, but I didn't replace the o-rings in the filter housing. I don't see it leaking there though. It looks wet, and always does, but it doesn't seem like it's leaking there. If it does, I think I would see it on the ground.

I need to know the common places coolant can leak. I've looked all over, and can't find squat. I'm NOT blowing white smoke, and I'm NOT seeing white crap in the oil, and I'm NOT getting bubbles in the overflow tank. So I don't think my engine is going.

If it REALLY slow look at the coolant level sending unit (on top of radiator with wire coming out) it can seep out, then because the radiator is hot, dry with little evidence of a leak.

Replace gastet.

It is leaking out the coolant sensor on top of the radiator.

Could that be the reason why it smells?

Also, it's running hotter than normal. A little more than half way.

I'll try flushing it tomorrow morning.

It was leaking there on mine too! And yes you will smell it cause it cooks on the radiator as your driving. I used gasket maker to seal mine up, and haven't had a problem since!

You need to check the hose on the back of your intake manifold. The BAC has coolant lines running to it too. I just had to change mine out. That's where mine was leaking.

I had a nasty coolant leak I just fixed. It came from the coolant hose connecter (metal part) that goes into the back of the throttle body. It turned out it had a big hole rotted in it. So we just did the throttle body mod and that fixed it

The leak on the sensor makes sense on why it smells.

I just took the thermostat housing off and half the gasket was gone. I have a spare thermostat around, so I'll replace that now. And I'll flush it in the morning.

Hopefully, this will fix the heating up so I can drive to college.

Thx for the replies. Keep em coming.
