cold start vibration, backfiring, stalling and flooding

So, every morning when i go to start the 7 it starts right up

However, the last two days it will start then just stall immediately, unless I keep it alive with some throttle play. While keeping it alive, it vibrates like mad, smokes and pops until I get it above 2500rpms. Then, all is normal.

If I let it stall, it is a 5 minute exercise of manipulating the fuel pump switch to clear a seemingly massive flood, after several backfires and a struggling start it comes up and runs, all is normal.

It is just that start; the first one of the day, every other start is nice and perfect.

Water thermosensor? My first guess.... I will check it out tomorrow during my time off work.

Starting map on the Rtek has not been modified.

I'm having almost this exact issue with my '79, emissions removed, DLIDFIS. The only difference is it's not just the first start of the day, but every cold start.

Sorry for the crosspost, but I thought it might help narrow things down (if it actually is the same cause) - the SA doesn't have a lot of things a 2nd gen does...

Yea, its completely random now. Sometimes it's there on a cold cold start, otherwise its not.

i don't want to scare you, but this sounds very similar to when my rear rotor went out.

Doubt it. Great compression. About 5000 miles on a rebuild.

Crazy - I have about 10,000 miles on a rebuild. It does feel like combustion isn't happening on one of the rotors.

3vil, what happened when your rotor went out? What exactly failed?

My car does it. Im 99% sure its the thermosenser. To much fuel on the cold start up. The pops are all that fuel igniting.

try a new set of plugs. my TII was acting up after it's rebuild and somehow BOTH new trailing plugs died? new set installed and it fired right up. my 86 had the same problem not too long ago.. I don't know if NGK's QC is lacking or what but basically now I get new plugs every 6 months.

you would have to ask rw-7, he's the one who tore the motor apart. it had like 115k on it and it didn't look very well maintained when i got it. i had a street port n/a sitting on a stand in my living room when it happened so i wasn't really stressing it.

Thanks for the follow-up, 3vil.

Here's what I found out in my case: I have a lot of coolant leaking into one of the rotors. When I pulled the plugs and turned it over, about 3 ounces of coolant spewed out on the ground.

Doesn't appear to be any water in the oil, so I'm pretty sure it's either a water jacket seal or an internally-cracked housing. Really hoping the former :-)

I guess that was steam, not smoke I was seeing after startup.
