If you have the stock filter keep it. Put in a nice filter in that box and you are good to go. It pulls air from in front of the radiator which is nice and cool.

There is basically no CAI for the TII model, unless you go make one yourself.. To be honest the stock intake system is pretty good unless your going for high power mods.

The car comes stock with a CAI. Did a previous owner remove it?

I'm asking out of curiosity, not to incite a war...
Could someone explain to me where the stock intake snorkel is actually drawing it's air from?

My car was completely stock- airbox, snorkel and all the plastics ahead of the radiator- and I couldn't see a flowpath from the nose intake to the airbox snorkel.
In fact, it looked like Mazda went out of their way to isolate the intake from the airflow to the rad.

Clearly, that area is getting air- I couldn't see from where and it certainly didn't appear to be a "cold air" intake.

Anyone?

Yes, it is a little confusing because there isn't a dedicated intake duct upstream of the snorkel inlet. It pulls from the back side of the front fascia. If your hood still has the rubber pieces attached to the underside, you will see that the stock intake is fairly well insulated from the engine bay.

I had a huge thread about this somewhere, but the end result is that it doesn't make a huge difference unless you drill some holes or something to get cold air to where the intake is. I just bought a cone filter from ebay, apexi power or something to that effect and then left the stock air snorkle there and put the top of the airbox over my cone to keep a little bit of the engine heat out. Not sure if it actually works but I get the sweet cone filter noise.

ALSO it is a lot cheaper if you just buy a cone filter from a good company and then fabricate it yourself, most of the kits are overpriced for the little bit of good they do.

This pic (from the Corksport ad) basically says it all...

A perfect intake air path...once you eliminate the FTP lens, the headlight assembly and a bulkhead.

Yeah the stock intake is cold air. Some people put in a cone intake while inadvertently making it a warm air intake, making things worse than before. The common solution then is to custom make your own box (any well sealed box will do) to get cold air again. But the gains from a cone intake are minimal. Try an exhaust first. Even then you'd probably want to do tuning, more fuel and boost before a better intake.

Yes, and some custom ducting between the FTP inlet and the CAI inlet would help too.

my point wasn't whether it works or not, in fact it seems like it would work better than anything else i have seen. i was just saying that price is way rediculous.

Mariah sells a cold air box but it obviously wont work with any FMIC's as far as I can tell. Couple that with a stainless TID from Corksport and you have a nice intake system.

Upgrade your intercooler and convert to cone filter. Your intercooler does the "cold air", thats its job. Or you can debate with the experts here all day about which is the best setup for this car.

Removing the FTP lense? lmao theres a headlight behind that, and than a wall, so its pointless.

Go with a cone setup, than cut a hole at the bottom and direct air to it.

I have one I don't need any more, consists of the filter box, snorkel, and mounting brackets. It's not in excellent shape though and there are a few 1" holes cut in the front face of the top half in the hopes it would draw in air more easily.

I would go with this:

Not $100, but not $600 either.

Nice, I actually think I'm going to experiment with some sort of hood induction above where the filter is. Not sure how I'll work it out since I don't want my car to look ghetto. I CAN'T WAIT FOR the summer to come. I do all my work in an open barn so cold = no work. lol.

i bought that kit once, it works but when i recieved it and tried to install it i had to do ALOT of my own cutting to make it fit. i would recommend against buying it from them, just be creative and make something yourself, its the same amount of work and cheaper.
