Hey guys I just bought a new intake for my 87TII and was thinking of fabbing a cold air box out of fiberglass like the mariah one. How hard of a project would that be for someone who has never fiberglassed before? Also is there any other place to get a cold air box made for our cars? I haven't seen any...Thanks guys

According to the home page of the forum, there is a cold air system out now but no info is available. Lots of people have made their own and if you search for cold air box or cai you will probably find all you need to know.

 

Might want to consider aluminum if you're not too handy with fiberglass. Aluminum resists heating, too, so as long as it is sealed fairly well, it will stay quite cool inside. Do a search, everything possible has been mentioned before I think.

since when does one of the most conductive metals resist heat????
i have never heard of aluminum insulation but i have heard of fiberglass. aluminum is just likely to help keep the temp on either side equal. it might be good to use aluminum on the inside and fiberglass on the outside though since the rushing air can cool downt he metal and keep the temperature constant.

Aluminium is probably going to be the easiest to make. You can glue heat sheilding to the outside (available at places like Pegasus or Racer Wholesale). You will also want to use some foam rubber along the top to create a seal against the bottom of your hood.

If you are good with composites, a fiberglass/foam core/fiberglass setup would be really nice for good insulation. Unfortunately its not the cheapest.

Regardless, anything that shields the heat radiation from the motor is going to help. If you make the box small enough, you will be moving air through it fast enough so that there won't be a large change in air temperature from ambient to into your engine. (even with bare aluminium separating your engine compartment from your filter)

Also, to help some more, try the heat sheilding all the way up your intake track to further protect your induction from engine heat.
