coilovers

I'm looking for coilovers for my fc mostly to clearance wider rubber up front, adjustable ride height + ability to corner weight the car would be nice too.

What experience do you guys have with coilovers? What brands have you used? Any problems?

I want real info from people who have real experience with these on their own car(s). Not what you read in an ebay ad or message forum etc...

thanks.

I hear JIC is good. A buddy of mine has a set of Apex'I coilovers and they feel nice....really nice...

you can also go with the Ground Control coilover kit that uses Tokico struts...

I wish I had an experience with coilovers to tell, but not yet.

Just imagine the tire width you can get though, 245 in front, maybe even 275 in rear, ooooo

I had mazdaspeed coilovers (not sure which, they were on it from japan) and they were very very good. My friend has tien's setup for track and he is in disbelief with how well it handles (so much in fact that he bought the car off me )

i got tein springs right now on stock shocks with 205-55-16 wheels in the front and back, i have no wheel gap in the front and the tires rubed through the coating on the spring and now a little section of the spring is exposed and if i try to offset the wheels then it will rub the fender. so i would suggest 205-45 for the front with 30mm backspacing and 225-55 or 225-60 in the rear and kyb agx adjustible shocks

Teins are overrated, go with the Ground Control or Mazdaspeed

from what i have seen, you can't beat the GC coilovers for the price.
http://www.ground-control.com/?D=29b...85f81bae188263

it gives you a LOT of options too, since you can use whatever shock you want and pick whatever spring rate you want.
so you could go with a rebuildable, custom valved, and independent rebound/compression shock (like you can do with the Koni yellows), and get all the adjustability you need for a good price.

What offset are the wheels on the front that you are rubbing with 205/55r16?

I have JIC FLT-A2, and they are very good, but if you plan on daily driving it, I hope you have good roads around where you live, cos they are STIFF! It handles fantastically when the roads are smooth, and it has full ride height adjustability without sacrificing shock travel.

I've got the ground control coilovers with KYB AGX shocks, and they handle great. The ride is kinda stiff, but you can use progressive springs with the GC kit and it wouldn't be as bad.

my KTS coils should arrive from splparts any day now, from what ive seen (friends s14), they are a badass for price, and much better than the shitty valved tien HE's he used to have.

I've ridden in my buddy's s14 with KTS coilovers and they are pretty stiff and handles well. Post your reactions/comments when you get then installed and take them out for a spin. I was considering buying them myself. Did they let you choose your spring rates?

I've got a set of tein HR's, and the car feels great. very stiff, but it's still soft enough to suck up bumps mid corner, and it still allows me to feel the weight transfer.

My friend has a set of Endless B2's, and they are a lot nicer then my setup. His car (fc turbo) has the same spring rate, yet his rides better. As for the handling, i havent pushed his car hard enough around corners to tell any difference.

another buddy of mine has the tok./GC setup..and he whoops us, our fancy JDM coilover'ed asses at every autoX. The only problem i have with that system is the aftermarket shocks arent valved stiff enough to damp the heavy spring rates.

0 offset but if i offset them i might rub the fender cause right now they are about 10-15 mm from the fender but some how they dont rub when i hit a bump

Well the KTS website says 8/6 kg but kuah is selling them with 9/7 (what i wanted). he could probably get custom spring rates if you wanted, as he gets them directly from kts.

http://www.splparts.com/

for those interested, (dont think its cluttering the thread, its usefull info for those shopping for coils) click on universal and then suspension. The price on the fc should be the same as s13/s14, so figure in shipping and its a quite cheap for a quality product.

They came with the car. Put up a wtb thread for the struts on the forum. You might get a couple of good deals that way.

ive heard nothing but GARBAGE for recommendations. Peng, you made a good choice w/ the Kei's. Kei Office coilovers are quite nice.

they are middle of the road or close to high end as far as real japanese racing equipment goes. the only thing you could have gotten that would be better are Ohlins or QA2's.. near as i can tell anways.

ive heard nothing bad about Kei's... only good stuff, from my friend who Lives in japan and had them on his GT-X and also from Supra guys too.

i think youll like them just fine

i can ALMOST fit 235's on the front of my FC, they barely rub the lower coil on the stock setup. all i need is a set of 5mm spacers and i can put the 17x8 SSR's on the front of my car, and itll look the business. id like to get a set of 5mm spacers for the rear too, so i can replace my 255's w/ 265's... but, i dont have nearly enough torque to need them. but again, they LOOK bad ***, IMO

I've got Bilstein coilovers on my S4 Tll with 400lb springs up front and 250's in the back. Ride is very firm, but the handling is excellent (firm meaning push down on the front fender and the car doesn't move at all).

Stock Tll 16" wheels (40 offset) and a 3 mm spacer and the wheel rim would just barely touch the lower spring perch. Go to 17", and the rim clears the top of the perch...so with 16's I have more of a clearance issue than with the stock setup.

ahh yes, so you had trouble w/ the actual WHEEL touching on the coil overs??

the barrel of the SSR clears on the front, its just the sidewall of the tire that touches the spring. and i can rotate the wheel, it just rubs all the way around... so there is probably -1 or -2mm of clearance. if i get a 10mm spacer, i can jump up to a 245 in the front and still have maybe 3mm of clearance on the stock spring, and it wont look like 4x4 mode w/ the wheel gap.

Just wanted to mention that in my experience I have never gained backspacing by going to coilover on the FC. If anything it might force you to run a thinner tire or a lower offset. i.e. With Stock style struts and 17x8 +35 I could run 235/40/17, but now with coils I had to use a 3-5mm spacer so the tire wouldn't hit the coils. I had a little more luck with 225/45/17, and barely required a spacer at all.

Depending on the vehicle and the brand of coilover you might not gain space by going to coilover. Just wanted to make sure you take that into consideration.
