coil over question

I was wondering something about coilovers. Do they allow you to lower your car any way you want? Like say 2" up front and 1" in back, etc? I saw the TEINs are $1059 from the Rx7 store and thats pretty good when comparing to just springs and struts/shocks.

Yes they do, you mean height adjustable.

Yep, height adjustable. I know you can adjust how stiff it is as well, but never really heard much about ride height. Still would need a camber kit if I lowered it too much though right? Also, what are pillow ball mounts(or something like that)? Sorry I have not been too into suspension. I am really trying to see if its worth it for me to get a coilover system or just some KYB adjustable struts and HKS springs as I had planned. Thanks.

Im not to sure about the pillow ball mounts, I think they replace the stock mounting system under the hood at the corners, so they might be camber adjustably, but not sure. The TEIN HA kit is what I'm planning on putting on my car, it meant for the drift!

coil-overs will not directly effect the stiffness of you suspension. They will only allow you to adjust ride height. Changing the ride height might also change the stiffness a little due to the spring being in a more-or-less compressed state; but you will not be able to adjust the stiffness alone. Camber kits are a good investment if you're gonna drop more than an 2 inches, and the will also lower the car a bit so you can let the coil-overs out a little and save some suspension travel. I can't see why anyone would bother to buy a spring kit and not a coil-over setup? I recommend Ground Control unless you have the money or need for better. I have the GC kit and it has been trouble free for almost three years.

Coilovers will directly effect the stiffness of the suspension, the Teins we are talking about have like 15 way ride adjustment. Ground Control is very nice since they let u pick the shocks u wanna use with there spring and height adjustment thingy.

Well yes; if the shocks are adjustable then you can adjust the stiffness, but the fact that it is a coil-over setup does not have much effect on stiffness other than picking a spring rate to begin with.

Well I won't be doing any REAL racing, just some trips to the drag strip is all. I know I don't really NEED a coil over system, but it would allow me to set my car up however I want it is all. Anyone know how much I would need to lower my car to fit some 225/40/17s all around and for there to be no gap? I heard the HKS springs give a 1.5" drop so I have been leaning towards those.

Ryde.. I run tokico illuminas and tokico springs a big kit all 4 from rx7.com and it lowered my car about 1 inch. Sure does handle better. It is not adjustable though.

Heres what it looks like with 17"

Alright when looking at a coilover like the Tein or even ground control you'll want to make sure the spring will remain in it's proper position when at bull rebound. Coilovers which do not have independent ride height and preload will usually require helper springs to do this. Of course it's if you lower more than one inch. The Tein is a shortened shock body so it will be lower right off the bat. Hopefully you can maintain slight preload at full extension.

Here's a pic of suspension that has independent ride height and preload, as well as the pillowballs and camber plates.

I'd get the Teins over the Ground Controls. But the step above that would be too look for a monotube with separate preload features.

R.o.D it sounds like you're of the same mindset as me. Although coilover wouldn't be mandated, for the small increase in price when compared to a full AGX and Eibach setup, why not, right??

anyway, I think I'll likely go the Tein route also. Price seems very affordable for a complete system and quality and reputation preceeds the name.
