clutch...thump?

i just recently purchased an 88 nonturbo rx7. the car runs really nice. in fact the only problem i have with it is that when i release the clutch there is a weird thump noise from the back. what could this be?

Does the thump noise occur when you are coasting in gear?

It's like a $120 part (I think) and maybe about 1 hours labor...
Couple hundred dollar job?

I managed to find a re-man master cylinder at the local parts store here for around $80. Turned out to be a rear caliper leaking that was my problem.

New brake master cylinder from Mazda is about $100 - $120.&nbsp Add one or two quarts of brake fluid to flush the brake system, because you need to for such a job (unless you furnish the brake fluid to them?).&nbsp Brake bleeding takes some time, so chalk up two hours of labor for that.&nbsp You're looking at a $250-$270 job from the Mazda dealer.
