I just got a 86 RX7 non turbo. I had to replace the manual transmission because the drive shaft broke and beat the old transmission up. The new transmission is used but shifts gears when not running. After installing the transmission and hooking everything back up I tried running it through all the gears to make sure everything was good. It will not shift while running as if the clutch is not being engaged. I have tried bleeding the slave cylinder and it has had no effect. Anyone have any idea what I might have done wrong? If I put it in gear then start it the wheels spin fine I just cant get the clutch to engage.

 

Definitely sounds like a clutch issue. Is the clutch fork seated right? Grabbing the throwout bearing, sitting on the pivot, and slave cylinder properly engaged?

Im assuming the clutch was good before the you changed the trans and is still good.

 

Have a friend make sure that your slave is pushing on the fork far enough.

Then you will have to pull the trans again, check the fork for any cracks and if their are replace it.

Then check your pilot bearing, Replace and be sure to get a seal for it as well.

 

Thank both of you for your info. I have already checked the fork and it is moving. I am going to try to pull the inspection plate and starter before I pull the trans again to see what is going on inside.

You guys should search this problem, I've seen this posted dozens of times.

 

I pulled the trans today and the needle bearing is destroyed. I think I messed it up using the bolts to pull the trans to the engine. I am going to get a clutch kit and put it in this weekend. Pray for me!!!!

 

I feel your pain. I am ordering the exact clutch I took off to start at ground zero. Let me know how it goes.

 

Today I put the needle bearing (pilot bearing) and new clutch kit in. The transmission was having some problems going in just like last time. But I didn't make the same mistake as last time and use the bolts to pull the transmission to the engine. I had someone put pressure on the back side of the engine near the firewall which gave the right angle to just slide the transmission right in. After bolting everything up and test driving it, it looks as if this might be a great car.
