clutch problem
ok so i was driving in verrry slow traffic with my 89gtu a few days ago..not quite coming to a stop but going very slow. the clutch was pushed in quite far for alot of the time as i creeped along. traffic started to speed up and i noticed my clutch pedal was in well over half way when i released it. it was not quite on the floor. also, it was in this far, but it wasn't slipping. i didnt want to stop on the freeway so i drove it shifting as well as i could without the clutch to the next exit and pulled over on a side street. stopping would kill the engine and with it running i couldnt get it in gear <-evidence of clutch being stuck engaged.
i kicked the pedal a couple of times to see if maybe it was caught on something, it wasnt. i then pulled it back towards me with the front of my foot and it went back to its proper place. after that the clutch worked like nothing had happened. this happened once more the next day and pulling the pedal up worked again. today it was fine and did not do this.
i searched for clutch pedal sticking or not disengaging and found that people said it to check the fluid level because it was probably low, and if it was to fill it and if it went down again then it was leaking or something. well i checked my fluid and it was not empty, it was about 3/4 up between the min and max so im not low or leaking clutch fluid. does this mean that maybe my clutch master cylinder is dying or could something else be sticking the pedal?
thanks in advance for any help,
scott

hmmm.. im thinking you never changed your clutch fluid, so the cyliner could be rusted inside... or you could have an air bubble in there too.
try bleeding your clutch.
Thats my guess!

Then i've got bad news for ya. Mine did it once in peak traffic and freaked me out, then again about a month later and slowly it's becoming more frequently. I'm getting it looked at next Tuesday so if they turn up a fix, i'll let you know.

My car just did this, and i was just curious if bleeding the clutch and refiling worked for you. Is this something i could do myself?
I have a haynes manual, i'll look at that next chance i have to see what it says, but i'm not all that experienced in working with cars, so i'm just curious how hard this normally is?
I've no clue the last time it was changed, so it'd probably be a good idea anyways.

My car did this to me in peak traffic yesterday.
My clutch and clutch fluid is 20,000kms(12,500miles) old. I am pretty sure the clutch master/slave cylinders are original.
I'm waiting for a reply from my mechanic as to what the problem could be. I'll let you guys know what's going on.

Freak coincidence for you guys I just had this exact problem fixed yesterday.
If you get the clutch sticking to floor problem: you need to replace or get resleeved your clutch master cylinder.
This problem might dissapear for a while, but I assure you it will return. And it will get progressively worse until your car is a ******* BITCH to drive and possibly dangerous.
I tried to ignore it for a while, but there is a limit to the number of times per week i'm willing to drive without using a clutch so i had to shell out to get it fixed.
Dunno what all you yankees are looking at for something like this. But it cost me AUS:165 for the re-sleeve. And Something like 60 bucks in labour to stick it all back in. If I had two cars I would have done it myself, but no kint wanted to help out.
Anyways, that will fix this problem. Sorry to be bearer of bad news. If you want a (very) temporary fix, bleed the system. And whilst you are driving, pump the clutch a few times in neutral before selecting a gear when you are in carparks or traffic.

I have this exact same problem with my 88 gxl...I will push in the clutch...boom...sticks to floor...I really need to find out whether or not I need to have it seriously looked at or do I just need to bleed the clutch and then when I have time and money have someone seriously look at it...
and I can't do the pump the clutch thing...it will just drop to floor again...=o)

I ended up rebuilding the master and slave cylinders. about 200 bux CDN with labour. the clutch is like new now, I never realized how screwed up my clutch pedal was before
both of mine went at 60,000miles
DO THEM BOTH AT THE SAME TIME, don't screw around with just fixing one, it's not worth the hassle. If one is malfunctioning then the other is about to.
