Clutch and PP: Need Advice
Clutch and PP: Need Advice
Hey guys, I'm gonna get straight to it.
I'm thinking about getting an ACT xtreme 6 puck unsprung clutch with an Xtreme pressure plate. My question is: how bad is it for regular street driving? I've read a bit and apparently there will be a HUGE difference after upgrading from the stock components. Would it be a hassle to drive with an unsprung 6 puck and the accompanying pressure plate? Or would it just take a bit of getting used to?
I don't want driving my car to become a hassle, but since I am going to be replacing the clutch anyway, I figured I might as well go all out. I plan on putting a ~10lb flywheel in, as well.
The car is an 88 base, daily driven until winter rolls around, when she sleeps.
Basically, would it be overkill for my NA? I want the best performance I can get out of my car, and I can get these components for cheap. Mods in sig. And I'd rather not hear anything about going turbo. It's not an option...yet
.
Thanks,
James

It seems that everyone ells has no issues with stock clutch on a stock NA rx7. There is hardly any reason to go the race route here. I mean a TII pressure plate equivalent would even be overkill. Save your leg the cramps.
well im telling u this unless u are racing ur car on a daily basis ... u will destroy the pressure plate flywheel and disk in less than 10k kmh .... i know that for a fact ... from personal experiance ... no in an fc mind u but in a j body .... drove with a 4 puck and an 8lb flywheel and a stage 4 pressure plate .... and in a very short spand of time it was ruined .. sliped like a ****** fucked ... they are meant to be dumperd and thrashed ... if u baby them they wear out

Just food for thought.
Don't do it man and it would be worse with that 10 lb flywheel you plan on getting.....lol. It will take a lot to get used to and when you finally get used to it, it'll be just overkill for the type of driving condition you're in and the fact that you are not really pushing big power.
I used to have a 4 puck bronze sprung clutch disk and believe me, any little mistake in the clutch release....you will stall out. A unsprung clutch disk is even more unforgiving. Get something more for street use and keep the stock flywheel which in fact is better for launching, in my opinion.
Good luck to whatever you get and don't let the New York streets stress you out because of some clutch on steroids.

i thought it was that as well .... however i went to the local performance shop and asked him wtf .... he said a simalar thing happined to him .... the guy has his race licence ,.... so thats godda say somthing about a driver ... he said im not to hard on my clutch .... however it was mainly the particular application i was using it in
Thanks for the responses, guys. I thought that's what I would hear. I'll probably look into the RB 9.5lb flywheel with an ACT Street/strip clutch (original choice, but I saw this for cheap).

Doesn't SRP or whatever have a sale on that setup?
good choice, organic clutches are best suited for the streets. beware of that 9.5lb flywheel though, if you go too light the revs move faster...but this could be a burden as well as a blessing. The revs drop so fast in between shifts you'd have to have a seriously short shifter and fast extremeties to get it into the next gear before the rpms drop. exedy i believe has a 12.5lb flywheel, that sounds like a more streetable choice
