Clutch Malfunctioning 86 RX7

my 86 rx7 has a problem with the clutch. when i push in the clutch and hold it for about 20 seconds it reingages while the foot is still to the floor. when i take my foot off the pedal it sticks to the floor and i have to pry it up by putting my foot under it. but if i pump it afterwards a few times then if i push in the clutch for just long enough to shift and let it up it works normally. i really dont know what is going on here. i really need some help so i can get this thing running smooth.

Your clutch master or slave cylinder is going bad.

Replace them at the same time.

Not very hard.
Master is found in the upper right hand of the engine bay, right next to the brake cylinder. The one line leaning from the M/C goes all the way to the slave cylinder.

The slave is held on by two bolts by the trans.
The master is held on by two nuts by the clutch pedal on the inside of the cabin.

When you install you will have to bleed the line using the slave cylinder.

Did you check if you even have fluid in the master cylinder reservoir? Mine was doing the same thing you are explaining because of low fluid levels. After I filled it up. Clutch worked fine again.

Little details.... but good point!

But if that's not it... replace both master and slave.

It could be the fluid but probably the master and slave. I changed mine it was very easy took about one hour to install both and bleed system. It was well worth it..

Yeah your going through the same thing I went through.

Like everyone said, replace them both.

Slave will be on top of tranny behind intake stuff; there is a coolent hose in the way that you will want to remove (its going to get messy) and then the two bolts (14mm?). Have the clutch fluid tube thingy disconnected before removing Slave.

Master, two (12mm?) bolts on the inside of the firewall (above clutch peddel) that need to be removed. Kinda hard to get to, but not impossible.

After those are both replaced, put in NEW Dot3 fluid and run it through a couple times just to insure that all bubbles are run out of the system.

Keep us updated!
