clutch disc alignment tool

How necessary is this? We're swinging in an engine on thurs, and I can't find mine. I have the feeling the last guy I helped with a clutch change kept it.... It's for a 1991 TII. Anything we could use in substitute?
None of the shops up here carry them without getting an entire clutch kit, which I've recommened that he get, but he is a little strapped for cash.... Any ideas? Swap is happening in Richmond BC.

I'd say it's pretty important to have the alignment tool. If it's only slightly out of alignment it's going to be a bitch trying to slide your transmission into the clutch/eccentric shaft, and you may end of up having to loosen the pressure plate and re-align it... Not fun work at all. I suppose you could eye-ball it, but I wouldn't

If you have the engine out of the car and on a hoist, you can eyeball and it will work. Just step back about eight or ten feet from the flywheel and make sure it lines up.
It worked fine for me.

Thanks a lot! The engine will be out and on a hoist, just wanted to make sure it was possible.

Just use the tool. It's cheap. Probably can get it at an autoparts store.

i have used a peice of broom handle in the past. i took the time to notch it tho. might work, might not. i used it on a backhoe clutch i was replacing, and the input shaft was the size of the handle to begin with. might take you a while to carve one down that small.

If I could find a shop that carried them in BC, I would. Shipping from the states by tomorrow morning is kinda impossible. EYEBALLIN' it!

if you've got the engine and tranny out of the car (or a spare tranny sittin' around) you can take the engine and set it on its side with the flywheel/clutch facing up and the pressure plate not fully bolted into place (not even finger tight), then drop the tranny on, line it up, lift it straight off, and tighten the biotch down..
