Clutch or Clutch cylinder?

So on my way back to work after fixing the altenator belt, the clutch pedal goes to the floor and doesn't come back up. Once i finally get it to pull up, it seems to work it has pressure unless I have to hold it down for stop and go traffic, then it releases while on the floor.

I'm thinking clutch master cylinder, what do you guys think?

I'm not having a great week with my car...

I could only do a quick glance, but they looked okay. The fluid level is not low.

Same thing happened on my Corolla. It was the Clutch Master Cylinder, finally replaced the original at 220k miles. When I tore it apart, the seals looked real worn, so if your fluid level is consistent, your master could need rebuilding/replacing.

Mine did the same thing. Randomly wouldn't come back up off the floor. Acted like me after a night of hard drinking.....face down and non-responsive.

I replaced both the master and slave cylinders. Clutch is working beautifully now.

I would go ahead and rebuild (or replace if you prefer) both cylinders. More than likely what is happening is the fluid is getting past the rubber peice inside, so it is going from one side to the other, so no fluid loss. It doesnt leak, just moves from one side of the plunger to the other. My brakes on my accord are doing the same thing, and the cost of the rebuild kit is $6 less than a whole rebuilt brake master cylinder with a lifetime warranty. So I just got the whole thing, just havent replaced it yet. It doesnt do it all the time, just in stop and go traffic like your clutch.

Rebuilding them is very easy and cheap. That is what I would do.

Good luck.

Sucks to have a bad week with your car...one thing after another....Ive had those kinda of weeks a LOT lately. My accord is currently side-lined due to someone hitting us in the front, so it is down till I get all the parts I need and the appraiser is done estimating. Before the accident, had to buy all new tires (old ones were almost bald), had the brake problem, muffler fell off (ordered and it is now just sitting here till I get things fixed), had to replace the stabilizer bushings, and driver's side outer tie rod end. Like I said...one thing after the other! :

Oh...forgot to mention I had to replace the valve cover gasket, grommets, and spark plug seals too due to a small oil leak.

Then it's back to the store after work to order the replacement cylinders. For the time being I'll have to figure out how to get the clutch peddle to stay with my foot.

Looks like it's time for a bit of string and tape.

Order? The stores around me usually have the stuff in stock. Are you going to rebuild or go new/reman?

Rebuilding them is very easy. The only real 'special' tool you MAY need is a hone, and you can normally borrow it from Autozone for free.

The master cylinder rebuild kit should be about $13-$15 and the slave cylinder kit should be just a little less.

**EDIT** I just checked on prices of new cylinders. You will be looking at over $65 for master and over $45 for slave. Rebuilding is the way you should go.

I just ordered new, they'll be in on Saturday.

I didn't feel like rebuilding and not getting a warranty if i messed something up. This way they have a warranty.

buy new ones. that way you dont have to worry about yours being scored inside or anything. nopi's online store has both cylinders for pretty cheap. sounds like your master, but you might as well replace both seeing as how the release cylinder is pretty cheap and it'll be easy to do both at once. maybe get a new SS line as well, though you will need to get that from mazdatrix or something.

Yeah, I did notice that. LoL
I ordered it from a local parts store, it'll be in on Saturday. If i ordered it elsewhere I wouldn't get it until monday, and I don't think i can wait that long.

Damn!! Nopi is about 1/3 the price! I think I'll call checker in a minute and cancel my order...

Did you order both? It should just be the master that is bad, not the slave. If the seals on the master were bad, the fluid would leak back in the the reserve (giving you that loose pedal), if the seals were bad on the slave, you should notice some liquid on the tranny gushing out from the slave.

Squeeze the rubber boot on the slave cylinder if you don't see fluid yet, it will hold quite a bit.

Yeah parastie, you'll be ripped off buying them local, unless you are just getting the rebuild kits. Perhaps, buy the kits local, and then sometime in the future you can get new ones off nopi online store.

So what are you going to do as far as the cylinders go? Order them online?

I can't do anything now, I have to wait for this charge to be cleared. They charged a total of $260 to my account and they're claiming they didn't.

my master went out and my slave looked ready to go at any time, totally trashed lookin and kinda sticky little. plus i figured i'd want a better slave if i got a tougher clutch, which i did and now that i do im happy knowing i shouldn't have any clutch hydraulic problems for awhile . unfortunately i didn't find nopi until right AFTER i bought my parts from mazdatrix
