Clutch cause drivebelt failure??

I just spent the last month or so swapping in a new tranny in my 90 vert (everyone said tranny was shot and i believed them, turned out to be my clutch disk kinda exploded around redline) but i put the new tranny i ordered from triadmotors since it had like 80k less miles on it than mine.

Anyways i finally got my cat-back tonight so i got to drop the car of the jackstands from the tranny swap (stock exhaust fell to piles of rust while taking out transmission) and i was going to take it for a test drive, i started it on the jacktands and ran it through the gears with the clutch in and everything seemed fine for a test drive. Since the car had been sitting for a few months....arlight about 4 months (kinda embarased it took that long but its really due to shipping in parts and waiting especially the tranny) the battery was dead so i jumped it with my moms suburban and let it idle and warm up for a bit before the test drive and while its idleing my friend outside the car says dude i think we f'ed up sounds like exhaust leak. I didnt hear anything till it got louder and then hes like yea that doesnt sound good so i pop the hood and my alt belt is wobbling like a **** and im like crap but the it stops and im like wtf then it starts again so i run and shut off the ignition and just as i do the belt ***** the bed and flies off.

Now at first I was like ok no big deal the car sat for months and have no clue when the belts were changed last so they must have dry rotted and tonight is the coldest night weve had so far in this little town of bellefonte (only worked through it to get my car running again) so the belt must have broke from the intense cold mixed with dry rotting and starting it while in intense cold. no biggy buy a set and put all new ones on just so i know theyve been changed recently.

But then as im about to jump in the shower to thaw out my girlfriend calls me and says she told her dad about it (very inteligent man btw) and he says that belts break when one part of the system is moving slower or not at all compared to the rest of it. I was again like wtf all i did was throw a new tranny on and did nothing to the engine.

So after all that my question is. Is it all right to assume that the mixture of starting, cold, and dry rotting made the belt go or........did i **** something up with the clutch and it made the belt pop. My thinking is that even if i did mess it up and lets say when im in neutral ( i was when the belt went) and the clutch is out and lets say the clutch is kinda rubbing against flywheel while in nuetral wouldnt that slow down the whole engine speed instead of one part of the pully system so if it all slowed down then that couldnt be the cause right?

And yes im just asking so i can sleep better knowing that its just one more of those thats isane i dont even know why it would do that fix instead of another tear apart.

Sorry for the long post i think i just need a hug and to be told everything is going to be ok and you will drive your rx7 once again.

Thanks guys
Matt

I'd say its safe to assume your belts were just crap.

I loved your wording though:
just as i do the belt ***** the bed and flies off.
"***** the bed"... Very descriptive. I like it. Hehe

Haha yea i got that one from my wierd aunt. One day we i was eating breakfast at her house and shes talking about her husband dying and she says yup one day i came home from yoga class or some crap and he **** the bed.......I was like uh thats great aunt ann. and she said no no i meant he died.......thats great aunt ann.......shes differnet. No need to talk of death or **** at the breakfast table.

But yea thanks micaheli for the reassurance i really couldnt figure out how one piece that slows the whole engine down could break a belt.
