clutch in backwards??
What are the symptoms of a clutch being put in backwards???
early gear engagement?
loose clutch play?
Harsh engagement?
Any help would be appreciated...
bruised face and ego.

You can't put a clutch disk in backwards, if it's structurally similar to the OEM disk- it won't sit flat on the flywheel, and you won't be able to bolt the pressure plate down correctly...It's MURPHY PROOF!

It is possible to put the clutch disc backwards.
Don't ask. :P
If you do this, the transmission will not engage gear no matter what you do.
It will sound like the gears are dragging a little and make scraping noises, but it will not go anywhere.

All right, guys, I gotta call BS on that, lol...
There is no way in hell my OEM clutch disk will fit backwards in my OEM flywheel without some serious metal tweaking on the pressure plate- the damn thing sticks up at least 1/2" from the flywheel machined surface if you even try it...And at that point you should realize something is seriously wrong...

i know at rotary revolution there was somebody outside the hotel trying to put their clutch back in since the dual disk clutch they had turned out to be in backwards.

Well, I don't know it is in backwards...
But I messed something up.
It doesn't want to go into gear, and the clutch pedal is a lot looser. I bled the clutch, but it will occasionally get stuck on the floor.
When I try to push it in gear, it tries to engage without fully being in gear and without the clutch being let out.
When I first started it up, after i let it warm up for a few minutes, there was a smell of burning when I tried to engage the clutch.
But I messed something up.
It doesn't want to go into gear, and the clutch pedal is a lot looser. I bled the clutch, but it will occasionally get stuck on the floor.

Well, chalk it up to another "live and learn" episode and break into her again...We all go through things like this when we first started out figuring out what a wrench was...
The burning smell would be indicative of the disk not doing what it's supposed to be doing, I guess...The big beefy spring part should go towards the flywheel on the disk, and make sure you "cross-torque" the pressure plate down, to alleviate any uneven stresses during install...

Correct - NA clutches can not go in backward - the pp will sit about 1 inch above the stops, the bolts are not even long enough (for a sane man) to even start in the holes

The pressure plate is on there right... I think. I adjusted each bolt little by little.
And wayne, it has already been chalked...
Speaking of chalking, I found a really cool tool call and extension and a swivel. But I guess I'll invest in a power gun to try to get it done faster.
It takes about a week working two to three hours a day, and just really wanted to have it done after this past week. I'll break it open again on monday at @ 5:30 am and see if I can't find the problem.
Any advice on getting the tranny back on. Last time I was pushing it up and in with my hands, directing the rear with my left knee, and pumping the jack with my right foot. If there is an easier way, (I can do by myself) it would be tight if someone let me in.

Thanks, I work at a junkyard during the day, and they are all amazed at the loyalty of rx7 owners to other rx7 owners. I just wanted to say thanks for the help, and you people are the reason I haven't bought piston in the past four years and three cars.

could be clutch fluid...
my FIRST rx (and my only car at the time) decided to deposit the contents of the clutch fluid reservoir on the driveway one night... It felt a lil weird on the way to school, and eventually I ended up in 4th gear flying through the parking lot
... Good thing these cars have good handling... Then some guy tried to steal my parking spot and I was forced to hit neutral and pull the ebrake LoL...

i think your rubber on the slave cylinder is worn out and is letting fluid leak past it..thsi is why your pedal stayed on the floor...YOU CAN NOT bleed this...1st get a new cylinder and see it that works...also..make sure your clutch FORK! is in right,,they have been know to slip a little....check the small stuff 1st before you pull your tranny out!
