I too have similar issues, but I'm fairly confident of the cause: I had reciently installed mazdatrix sway bar endlinks and they click when i hit small bumps, or turn slowly in parking lots. I hope thats all the sound is. Other thoughts are loose steering rack, bad ball joints, or bad tie rod ends...

Is your alternator hitting a sway bar, or IC piping?

Have you done any suspension upgrades? Wheel bearings going bad? Pull off a wheel and probe around.

List all parts on your car that are aftermarket upgrades. Also pull and push on both front tires while the car is still, and turn the wheels and try again. If that does it, it could be a ball joint, or tie rod end. Another Idea is to pull a tire off, and see if there is anything loose, such as the tie rod end. Check the swaybar endlinks, as well as where the swaybar mounts to the chassis. Good luck!

My car does this...when I'm reversing and I have my wheel cranked, it will make thunking noises, much like the tire was hitting my body or something.

Ok- so after re-inspecting the front end of my car for the next autocross, I came upon a bolt that somehow fell into the subframe that holds the engine up. That was the cause of my issues. Hopefully its nothing serious in your car. Good luck!
