A clank when taking off is the U-joints. A clunk or thump while on/off the gas or clutching in/out will probably be the read differential mount.

How exactly would you fix it if it were the rear differential?

You go and buy a new mount and put it in.

I think it is your suspension frame hitting you subframe
i had this when i used a rear camber adjuster and set it a little too low

If you have access to a lift....get car up on lift and with someone in the car have them engage the clutch with the e-brake on....being under the car you can see if its your mount and or drive shaft. If you don't have access to a lift.....then if its only doing it in 1st to 2nd on hard shifts......id say it might be your drive shaft is starting to go.

Clunking with lower gear shift is usually the front U joint, in higher gears the rear one. FYI, if it is the U joint(s) you will have to replace the entire drive shaft. The U Joints cannot be replaced in the stock drive shaft. Just replaced mine. The shaft is 325.00 from Mazda.
