Clogged cats?

I read that clogged cats could lead to a rough idle, so I figured I'd check em out while trying ot diagnoise and fix my idle problem.

I did a search, and the best I found was to "tap on the cat with a hammer" but what am I supposed to be listening for, and is this even the best way?

I'm guessing my cats are doing allright because I'm still getting good boost, according to the stock gauge.

on a related note, my little rock guard/negative heat shield came off the underside of the cat, is this something I should worry about? get it replaced eventually? before the snow? right away?

thanks for making it through all this

If you bang on it and hear something rattling inside then it's probably bad.

Mine would glow cherry red at night, that's when i decided to replace mine.... Is your idle bouncy/hunting, or just "rough" ? what do you mean specifically?

I have not used a heat shield in years. Just don't park over a hay field. Much too lazy to put mine back on.

I would think your rough idle is coming from somewhere else. My cats were extreamly clogged and my car idled perfect.

My main cat was clogged and my idle was horrible. I replaced it with a High Flow one from CATCO and gutted my pre cats while I was down there. My idle is now silky smooth.
