Cleaning rust from gas tank
Cleaning rust from gas tank
I just got an 87 gxl with some fuel issues. I looked into the gas tank and saw some rust "dust" collected right under the pump, along with surface rust along the top inside of the tank. What is the best way of cleaning the rust out? The tank is already out of the car, and I noticed you can't really clean it fully by just scrubbing it out cause of the metal plates in the tank. Is there like a chemical product that helps with eating the rust in the tank? Or would I just have to replace it? Again, it's really only surface rust from what I can see and feel.

As I recall, the POR-15 company sells a "fuel tank restoration" kit that contains some stuff to dissolve that, as well as a coating to prevent it from coming back.

Plain old muratic acid from the pool supply store will clean the metal. An Eastwood kit comes with a piece of chain to rattle around inside the tank to break loose rust build up. The POR stuff is great to coat the clean metal or Eastwood sells a similar product.
