Cleaned injectors, blew engine

Car is a 1990 NA gxl. I sent out my injectors for cleaning and in the meantime replace some of the old vacuum hoses in the car. Got the injectors back and put everything back together. The car had made 90+psi on all faces up untill this point.
I go to start her up and she fires up to 3k rpm as normal and then gets very lumpy and rough and just cuts out. The second time i start it up, she fires up to 4-5k rpm and the front rotor grenaded. 0psi on all faces on the front rotor now.

Anybody want to wager a guess what the heck happened? Car never moved, this was just on startup. Im going to be pulling the car apart in a week to figure out what the cause was. Really bummed, i know i fucked something up royal and this was my first rotary

I have to agree. If it just all of a sudden grenaded after you pulled the injectors out and replaced them, usually something falls in there causing it. DUCT TAPE IS YOUR FRIEND!

Like Styx said, you'll have to tear it apart and find out. I hope you didn't lose a diffuser. They're tiny and very expensive.

the intake was taped up during the whole process, the new seals between the injectors in the manifold weren't a tight fit but i thought they would still seal fine. My guess is that i was wrong, and due to a massive vac leak rotor one went.
If anybody has an S5 NA keg around, im looking

I used a drop of Krazy Glue to hold the two pieces together and then a third drop to keep them in the right spots. I have an S4 keg around, properly stored and wrapped, pulleys to flywheel if anything falls throigh with Styx!

I had a seal get stuck after being not run a few months. Got a friend to help me pull start it using a rope and another car. If you can get the engine spinning a few k rpm it may fire up.

an engine doesn't pop a rotor due to idling with lean mixtures, plenty of people suffer from vacuum leaks and engine failures aren't going left and right as a side effect.

either something got dropped into the intake while you had the tape removed or it was merely coincidentally time for the engine to go.

What makes you think it grenaded? maybe the injector is stuck open and it flooded?

This is true, I'm still disappointing in myself nonetheless. I was super excited to drive the car again and this is a real bummer. I just want to get the car running as soon as possible and preferably at a cost that wont have me considering a part out

Well Styx said he had an S5 engine for sale, and I definitely have 2 complete S4 engines that ran when pulled and stored, that you could buy and salvage parts from. You could use just your S5 rotors, eshaft and stat gears if you somehow didn't trash the front rotor too. S4 keg and S5 everything else if it would work? Stella is S4 irons, S5 eshaft, stat gears, and all manifolds and ancilliaries, then FD rotors and housings.

SHOW PICS OF CARNAGE! Please? Sorry for your loss, bud. We'll be able to help out!

His rotary will rise from the dead, Styx!

Hit me up if you're interested in that S4 keg. I do have a transmission should you need it too. I'm not afraid to prep it for shipping if you're willing to pay the price. I'm not sure where you're located but let me know.

Damn. That is a sad set of photos, brother. I can't see the middle three on my phone but the rotor whew. It really does pay to completely bag and label everything and tape up runners. I hope your rebuild goes well.

YEP..there is a slight hole where he was losing compression..lol!

Frankly we tore this thing down to see WTF happened and was quite surprised to see the big *** hole in it..the nut sheared in half in the Intake..

The New Engine will run on Orange/strawberry/banana Tropicana..
(we went through a gallon of that during the Teardown..lol!)
