Clean Injectors

Okay, once in while we have to clean our injectors cuz they get clogged up over time. What's the best way to clean them? Just pour injector cleaner into gas tank? Can you actually take them out from the fuel rail and hand clean them? If so how wuld you clean them?

If your going to pull the injectors, do yourself a favor and send them off to the professionals and have them cleaned and flow tested. You will never know the true condition of your injector by trying to clean them yourself.

I just sent mine off to witchhunter.com. They charge 15.00 per injector to clean and flow test them. Well worth the money.

Have them properly cleaned. Most communities have an injection shop if you check the yellow pages. Generally around $20 per injector.

Injector removal and installation instructions are in the Factory Service and Haynes manuals. This is also a good opportunity to replace all those old vacuum lines, gaskets, etc.

I'd highly recommend professional cleaning over anything you can do at home. Unless you happen to own an ultrasonic cleaning bath.

Check out local diesel service companies. Some service petrol injectors too, and in my experience charge considerably less for exactly the same service.

Update I just got back my injectors from Witchunter.com. Here are the numbers:

Spray pattern:
Before ---- Good / Good / Good / Poor
After ------ Good / Good / Good / Good

Static Flow
Before ----- 113 / 112 / 109 / 105.5
After ------- 114 / 115 / 114.5 / 115

Pulsed Flow
Before ----- 120 / 118 / 112 / 106
After ------- 122.5 / 122 / 121.5 / 122.5

Notice the flow differance on the last two numbers "before" the cleaning (last 2 numbers are for the secondary injectors). That right there is why you need to send these things off to have them professionaly cleaned. That flow differance could easily create a lean condition and be damaging to the engine (especially turbo engines). Mine NA blew the rear rotor with the poor flowing injectors.

Another thing I noticed is how well the primary numbers were before the cleaning. When you think about it, it makes since because the primary injectors are always pulsing and flowing. The secondaries only come on line depending on load and rpm. So if your not driving your car hard enough, the seconaries will clog more easily causing what you see in my flow numbers. My car was granny driven way to much. Also the cleaners you put in the tank do more for cleaning the primary injectors. If you use the tank cleaners, make sure the car is driven hard enough so the cleaning solution can clean the secondaries.

Anything poured into the tank will have little effect on the secondary injectors for the reasons t-von explained above.

OK, First;

I know absolutely NOTHING about ultrasonic cleaning. That said,

What is the advantage of a professional US cleaning over something like this:

Professionals will actually flow test the injectors before, during and after cleaning. Generally they also replace all the rubber o-rings as well.

Aren't you supposed to lube up the o-rings a little (with vasoline or somthing) before you re-install them to keep them from tearing?

They are a lot of ways to possibly get an injector clean, but without flow testing it afterwards you will never know for sure. Improper cleaning can make them flow worse. Particles that build up in the top of the injector can get lodged in the business end if it is not back-flushed during cleaning.

A good injector shop checks the coil, tests for leaks, verifies spray patterns, and flow tests the injector. Quite a bit of work is done to them.

IMO...At $12 to $30 each, it may be best left to the professionals.
