Clattering/grinding sound when reving past 3.5k rpm
sorry, but i have another problem with my 1990 gxl. It was in a fender bender, that took out the whole front right corner, buckling the frame, but leaving everything else pretty much intact.
The problem is when you rev it higher than about 3500 rpm, it makes a loud clattering type sound - kinda sounds like plastic gears grinding or something. Sounds like its coming from the engine somewhere. And it doesnt seem to affect the engine performance. Happens when free-reving and under load, at the about the same rpm.
Everything looks good around the engine, doesnt look to be harmed in the accident.
I thought it was the fan, but i removed it and it still made the same sound. Any ideas? Thanks

Of course something got bent and / or damaged.
You just need to find out what it is.

Well i took it for a drive yesterday, and it seems only to happen when on the throttle. When revving it from the eingine bay, it sounds like its coming from the front of the engine near the PS pump. Im going to try to take those belts (AC and PS) off today, and see if it makes the same noise. The thing is, the engine was untouched in the accident, so i dont think it could be something bent, unless it was from the momentum of the impact

I finally figured out what was making the noise. When i took the front end apart after the accident, i took of the air relief silencer under the right headlight, and never put it back on. Today, i discovered the air relief silencer is what gets rid of that annoying clattering/grinding noise! So for future reference, dont ever take that thing of if you still have the air pump on
