Chevy Suburban destroyed my GTU!!!!

Well, here's the story!! The suburban hit me at around 60MPH. I was traveling south in I-5, half a mile from the Sacramento Airport Exit. I was stopping due to traffic and the idiot was not paying attention (cops say he may have been on his cell phone). Anyways, he hit me square in the rear, and the car rolled into the next lane where I was smacked again by another car that did not stop. The car rolled until it went over the enbankment and dropped 75 feet into a tomato field. Everything started on the left lane and my car ended up about 200 feet away down the enbankment.

I consider myself lucky to be alive. I was not hurt, except for the soreness in my neck and back. This happened in the middle of rush hour traffic.

I tell you what, it is refreshing to know that I was that close to going over to the other side, but managed to get out of the car unhurt!! Even the CHP and EMS Medics were surprised to see me walking around. I'm still counting my blessings!!!

Wow, that sucks. Did you at least bitch out the driver of the suburban? Idiot drivers hurling down the freeway in a 2-ton death machine. That would really **** me off had it been me. I need to start leaving a couple feet between the next car in case of something like that happening to me.
Cars not fixable is it?
Sorry to see the car but at least your okay!

Wow, you are seriously lucky to be alive. Glad you are OK, sad to see the car. We can't see the other side of the car, so is that the extent of the damage? Looks like it is in OK shape after all that.

Another careless driver does some damage...

Did he at least get a citation?

He wasn't close to me at all, the cops didn't find any tire marks on the road from the Suburban, I guess he used me as a speed bump!!

There's no way to fix it. There's heavy structural damage and the pilars behind the doors are crushed. There's also some damege to the underbody caused by going over the curb and landing on the ditch next to the tomato field.

I didn't get a chance to curse him out, the cops kept him away from me since I was pissed off. There were 5 cars involved in the wreck.

Here's the other side, the under body of the car is bent to hell. The Pilars are crushed as can be seen in the pic.

you AREN'T ok, are you? *wink wink*

Did you ask that Surburban driver why the hell they need a truck that damn big? If they can't pay attention to what they are doing while driving, then don't buy a huge truck that can kill people with one of your mistakes.

The police target sports cars for speeding tickets because they are most likely to be repeat offenders. I say target the SUVs, at least we can stop in a hurry when we need to.

Glad to hear your ok.

Daayyyaaaammmm! Glad to hear you're OK!! That really sux though...

I dunno about you guys, but I HATE this goddamn SUV trend!! The last thing i need is some over-confident soccer mom on a cell phone in an excursion trying to take over the roads.

GOD, I dont see any reason for buying an SUV in the first place. They dont seat more that a sedan (excluding the HUGE ones). BUY A MINIVAN if you wanna drive kids to practice. If you wanna buy some 2x4"s or a refridgerator get a damn truck!! SUV's are unpractical for road driving. Their center of gravity is too high, they roll over, cant corner, reduce visibility of other drivers, tires explode, cause fatal accidents, start on fire, get <15mpg, are overpriced, overweight, sluggish, and the biggest POS's ever!

Go climb a mountain or take a drive through the saharra, dont crowd up our damn streets!!

My mom's friends were over and i heard them talking " I'd never go back to a car, theyre so low and unsafe" "I feel more confident on the road, I can really see whats going on around me"
JESUS Christ!! UNSAFE?? HELL NO!

I think people just buy them because everyone else does, or get caught up in the hype. Stupid dependant followers!!! Then they go crying to teh courts wehn they are paralysed because they tried to take a 45 degree corner 65 mph and flip the damn thing and say "but it has 4-wheel drive, must be a factory error"

If you watch the Simpsons and see/saw the Canyonero (the SUV marge buys), you'll laugh your *** off!!! LOL GREAT SHOW

Anyone agree with me here??

Post kinds got long, but i hate to see when something like this happens , especially to such a nice car....

GOOD LUCK !

He needed a freaking boat for all I know. He was about 5'5" and weighed around 275, his wife was a whale, maybe in the 350 area, she was taller lying down than she is standing up!! Their daughter was pretty big too, 15 and weighs a good 200!! There was another person with them, and she was huge too.

He was probably eating a pig when he hit me!!

That's what really sux, I don't live in Sacramento. I live in Tacoma, Washington. I was just on my way to Oklahoma. Lucky for me, (really lucky) I have family in Galt, which is a few miles south of Sacramento.

I had to leave the car there, since I had no place to take it to. But I don't know anybody there except my 65 Y/O aunt and Uncle.

I already have another 7, but I'm thinking of upgrading to a 3rd Gen. I'm not 100% sure yet, but feel free to talk me out of it!!!!

I would say if I was going to be in a crash I would want the big suv. which is why people think they are safe. but for driving I'd way rather take the car because it's less likely to have one. I've had so many "almosts" I can't count them, but they would have been crashes if I had some big POS SUV. and I've had 2 cases where I would have crashed in almost any other car but rx7s kick ***. 4 wheel drifts going 60km/h tires squaling, missing by less then 2 inches. one was someone running a stop sign and one was a big *** truck turning left infront of me comming the other way. the veiw was blocked cause there was another truck turning left going my way in the left lane. and that one was the day after I bought this car... that shook me up a bit.

thats why when I get some spare money I'm getting a 6 point roll bar for the street I doubt I'll ever roll it but I'll probably get hit by some big truck some day...

Well yoink your engine and tranny, get a lawyer, sue the hell outa them for negligance and damage. If you "suffer mental trama at the sight of suv's in your rear view" you might need to see a top the line psychologist. Buy a nice body car, place in your old eng/tran. tada, use leftover money to mod the *** outa it. If you take him to court, you'll surely get his address; presuming that fat sonabitch doesn't move (which it sounds like he doesn't move much to begin with ), wait a year and a half goto his house and put nails through the sidewalls of 2 tires. Just low enough not to be covered by insurance, so he pays it outa pocket. wait 3 months, pour brake fluid on his hood at night (or some other nice paint stripper. wait 2 months and place sliced hotdogs all over his suv. then decide if he has gone through the trouble that you have had to due to him.

lata, good luck hunting for a new ride, ***** done with, so what kind of car ya gonna get? TII, 3rd gen? BTW i keep a 5 pound footlong ratchet in my car for morons like this.

Josepi!

Broken RX7

Be very leery about what the insurance company will offer you. find out what these cars go for on the market and counteroffer if you have to.
For that matter, see what they will pay you and then what it will cost you to buy the car as salvage value. The parts on your model will make you a lot of money if you don't change them over to another car you might buy. The guys at the Mazda recylcing yard in Ranch Cordova get their mouth watering when something even as wrecked up as yours comes in due to the sheer value of the parts they can turn. Even something as simple as the sidemoldings is worth several hundred $$$.
I would also suggest being honest if you were hurt or not. There is a lot of fraud out there, but also remember future injuries are compensable.
I would not suggest attempting something personal in regard to the driver of the other vehicle. Its not worth it and the law has never condoned bodily injury to exact revenge for property damage. Besdies, there are a lot of RX7 drivers who use a cell phone while driving or don't have the turn signal option and cut people off. SUV's are not alone when it comes to stupidity while driving.

Bro,

My condolences. I'm glad you're okay, I live in Sacramento so I too can vouch for the crappy level of driver skill here. Looks like the people that hit you can't control their own appetites, how are they supposed to control a big SUV?

I've been rear ended before and it's one of the biggest fears of having a nice car, especially an older one. I've got a cherry GTUs and I'm sure the insurance company would want to give me like 3K for it if it go totalled.

Fight hard to get the money for your GTU, and if they start giving you flak just say, "Ooh, I've got to put the phone down for a minute, my vision just got blurry and I got /really/ dizzy. Man, that's never happened before. Okay, you were saying something about the cost of my car?" *wink*

Good luck!

KS

I agree. I know of another person whose wife got in a rollover crash in an FC and she came out with only minor cuts. Redleg9's car doesn't look too bad considering being hit by two cars and dropping 75 feet off an embankment.
