speakers in an 86
speakers in an 86
i have an 86 n/a and i am replacing the speakers. i know that the fronts are supposed to be 4" and the backs 6". but when i opened up the back ones they were just a couple 4"s as well...can i replace those with 6"s? or 6 1/2"s? what would be the right size? and for the fronts would 4 1/2"s work? thanks
On my 91', crutchfield (www.crutchfield.com) had polk speakers to fit the oddball size fronts and supplies spacers to fit 6.5" in the rear (replacing the 4"). They also had wiring harness adapters for the doors (if you have them) and radio. If your planning to replace the factory radio, crutchfield's double-din adapter kit looks very OEM.
If you don't have speaker tubs in the rears (like on my turbo II), then get some q-forms to keep the rears from over extending and blowing due to no back pressure.
Note to fit 6.5" in the rear, you might have to remove the OEM grill off of the cover and use the speakers grill. Otherwise the hatch won't close all the way (see pic below).
Also be sure to un-sauder the OEM wiring harness adapter from the old speakers and re-sauder it in-line with the new speakers so you don't have to cut the OEM wiring harness
