Checking TPS with DMM

OK, so what kind of reading should I expect, and which wires do I test? I now am fairly certain that it's the TPS that's causing this.

BTW, Since there are two plungers, how do I test it??! I knew how to do it on the s4, but now that i have an s5 t2, i'm in for a loop.

I set it using the two light method... but it still seems to be fubared. I think that might be the cause of my various hesitation/idle surge issues.

I can't help you because I too am trying to figur this out but I was wondering if you could take a pic of the throttle body. I need to see exactly how all the stuff that activates the TPS is assembled because I'm having to piece mine back together.

unplug the TPS, and with the HARNESS coming from the tps removed, make the end of the harness face you.

put the positive on the top prong, and the ground on the RIGHT prong.

measure OHMs

(make sure the car is nice and up to operating temp, but key-off..)

measure your ohms, you should have 1.0 or 10.00 or whatever.. depending on what your DMM's decimal point is set at..

anyways, it can be anywhere from 9.80 to like 14.00 or something im not sure.. but ANYWAYS turn the adjusting screw thats right next to the TPS until you reach dead on or as close to 10.00 as possible..

if your reading is getting all gay on you, push the throttle (with your finger) and then let it fall back into place, then measure again..

after it is set, drive around, come back, do it again - it may be a tad out of adjustment again - in which case, do it again until your satisfied..

*this was the way i was shown *

On your S5, the short range TPS black & orange wire pins should measure 1000 ohms on the warmed up engine idle stop.

Cool. I plan on doing this today... but i wanted to know if i have to warm up the car when doing the DMM tps setting? It doesnt go through the ecu, so the TPS should not be temperature dependant, right?
Thanks

For a S4, the car has to be warm and the TPS has to be plugged in and the ignition on. Then put the red lead of the DMM in the bottom left slot of the connector (looking at it from the back of the engine harness side) and turn the screw until you get a reading of 1 volt.

The Ohms don't do anything but tell you whether it's working or not, it is the voltage reading that sets it.

There are 3 ways to check the TPS.

The resistance method, the voltage method, and the checker lamps. The last one, too me, seems the least accurate.

I use the resistance method (got if off RETed's site).

At idle, your TPS should show 1k ohms resistance. When you open the throttle towards WOT, it should smoothly go to about 5K ohms.

What I do, is adjust the resistance to be 1k ohms at idle, using the adjustment screw. That's it.

have you tried adjusting it by the ohm reading it puts out? its pretty accurate to my experience..

I'm still very confused because all the methods mentioned are for the s4. In the s5, there are TWO tps sensors... so the wiring will obviously be different.
Thanks

the method i gave you earlier is for my s4.. so.. i would imagine its not much different, but what wire goes where i wouldnt be able to answer because im sure the s5 tps harness is different..
