Checking compression

OK this question may be stupid so go easy...
How do you check compression your self, can this be done or is there special tools involved.

You can get a remote start switch. That way you can crank the motor from the engine bay and look at the compression gauge.

what should the gauge read on average?what is an acceptable level of compression?

LOL I don't think he ment "by himself"...

readings should be between 85-120psi. the higher the better. that is with the needle still in the gauge

when you remove the needle it you are just looking for even bounces to make sure all 3 sides are the same. it will probably read alot lower.
