check engine light

I know this has probably come up before and I have tried searching 4 different times but no luck. Sometimes when I am driving the check engine light comes on, when I accelerate it goes off. This only happens sometimes, like once out of three times I am out driving. The car runs perfect so I dont know why this would come on. Should I ignore it or is there something I should check? Any ideas or links to other threads that would help?
Thanks,
Sara

Well l I had this exact same problem and I yanked the codes and got code 12....which in short means something was off on my TPS. This weekend I will hopefully have an ohm meter so that I might be able to check and fix the problem. I will try and keep you updated on what I get.

hmmm....

I dunno, but i have a similar problem with my ABS light.

It comes on once in a while, the ABS pump makes churning noises like a coffee pot and then when I press the brake it kicks back at me. I think I need to bleed the ABS system.

As for the check engine light, check the error codes.

you need to pull the engine codes from the ECU. Do you know how? Do a search for 89-91 ECU codes if you don't. VERY SIMPLE procedure.

My bet would be that you're O2 sensor is bad. But you won't be sure until you pull the codes.

Does anyone listen to me? It will be on the TPS. It has something to do with the afterburn system lagging and therefore the throttle "off key" triggers something wrong with the ecu and the throttle "on" will turn it off. If you are also getting big, LOUD *** backfires on the stock system this is what is wrong. Just set the TPS and checking the codes is easy.
