Check and cut valve

Check and cut valve
What is supposed to be inside the check and cut valve? I was pulling it out of my tank, and the clip thing at the bottom caught on the lip of the hole and everything fell into the tank. So far I got the spring out, but I've heard there's supposed to be a ball inside it? I looked in the FSM and couldn't find anything about it. I shook the tank around the best I could (it's off the car) I'm sure there's nothing else in there.
Will the car run if I just put the empty casing of the valve into the hole? I'm not going to be driving anywhere, just starting up in my garage to see if it runs.
