Check and cut valve

What is supposed to be inside the check and cut valve? I was pulling it out of my tank, and the clip thing at the bottom caught on the lip of the hole and everything fell into the tank. So far I got the spring out, but I've heard there's supposed to be a ball inside it? I looked in the FSM and couldn't find anything about it. I shook the tank around the best I could (it's off the car) I'm sure there's nothing else in there.

Will the car run if I just put the empty casing of the valve into the hole? I'm not going to be driving anywhere, just starting up in my garage to see if it runs.

Anything? I looked in the FSM again and saw that it has 2 parts, I'm talking about the in-tank part with one hose coming out of it. I could probably get the tank back in today, just need an answer to this.

But doesn't it also have something to do with pressure of vapors inside the tank or something?
