A working 6-port system does wonders for torque.

Bump the timing 10-22 degrees and enjoy the free torque!

Welcome to the forum! Also be sure to check out the canadian forum.

First I'd fix your badgiing.. do you mean an 86 GXL or an 85 GSL?

bumping the timing 22 degrees is insane. Would it even run with 22 degrees initial advance?

What kind of torque are you talking. Low end or high end? Low end torque:... insert v8. Not really much else you can do, provided everything is working correctly. Gutting your cat sure as hell wont help. If anything it will reduce low-end.

As far as high-end goes... Open exhaust (straight pipe would help for high end, but not low), working VDI and 6 ports, intake... Lots can be done up high, but not much down low. The rotors just aren't big enough.

...on 22* of advance, your rotor would be 7.333* before TDC (or, at least 7.333* before regular ignition point), meaning at high rpms you (might, if it works at all, 'cause that's a world of advance) get "the squeeze" effect (like kart racers employ, or like Mazda did with the 3rd super-trailing (which fires before the leading) plug in the R26B), but at low rpms you're just going to detonate... like crazy...

anyhoo, by your terminology (a North American saying "torque" almost universally means bottom end power) i'd say you mean you want more "off the line" acceleration, yes?? well, i'll tell ya this chiefnobum: there are ONLY EVER COMPRIMISES when it comes to performance.
you want "torque" (by which you mean bottom-end power)?? then you'll have to sacrific the top-end, a lot.

it's a pretty simple proposition: you need to burn more gas efficiently at lower rpms, so you enhance the low end breathing. the low flow rate of gases into and out of the engine at low rpms calls for runners which're longer and smaller in diameter on the intake manifold, header, along with a smaller diameter exhaust system and smaller ports. the smaller diameter increases gas velocity... no, this does not automatically mean more "back pressure". less back pressure is universally good: lower gas velocities DOES NOT MEAN lower back pressure. if you want the ultimate low-end exhaust system, get LOOOOOOOONG *** header pipes, and a 0.75"-1.00" straight-tube exhaust... there is an "optimal" velocity for gas travel, probably somewhere between 180-210 ft/s... a higher velocity means a lower static pressure, combined with the longer length of the headers which get optimal so-called "scavenging effect" (where the positive-negative exhaust-pulse waves intersect, meaning exhaust from the rotors take turns "pulling" the exhaust from the other rotor along) at lower rpms.
anyways, enough about that.

short of making more with what you have (ie: optimize efficiency for the low end), get more. *insert V8*
lame, i know, but there IS no replacement for displacement. although optmizing your BMEP will get you more respect

ive heard various things about advancing the timing... does anyone have any dyno sheets to show any improvement with advancing timing

i know that mdracing chip advanced the timing a lot at low rpms, and less as it got higher....

i am preety sure they did this for more low end torque... does anyone have this chip, or a timing adjustment box thingy that they ahve used to do this... and any dyno sheets to back it up?

Good luck making torque ( low end power) with a rotary. Most every mod you'll do will add to the top end but wont do anything or even hurt the low-end. A header, cold air intake, and pulleys would add low-end power, but if you really wanna be going fast you need to work on your top-end power.
