changing oil pan gasket - 86 rex
Hello All,
So I am not mechanically inclined at all.
I just bought an old clunker 86 rx7 and it seems to be leaking some oil.
I haven't put it up on ramps or anything yet, but just looking under the car, it appears to be leaking from the back of the oil pan.
I'm just curious how easy it is to pull the pan off to replace the gasket?
I've read that you may even have to raise the engine to do this, which I find obsurd and likely that I read it wrong.
I also haven't picked up any shop manuals yet, which I plan to do, but thought I'd start here first.
Thanks -

lol if im correct yes the engine needs to be lifted because im not shure if it can come out because the subframe is right below its easier than you think tho id almost go threw the trouble of pulling the entire motor...

Isn't the right motor mount attached at the bottom of the pan? Say yes. Soooooo...to remove the pan the right motor mount has to be detached from the engine. When you do that....what is going to hold the engine in mid air?????? No mount there anymore is what I'm driving at.
I used floor jacks......buch of cut up wood and stuff in general to hold the engine in mid air so the pan could be removed.
I know thats true on a Turbo and although I also own a non turbo.........I'm too lazy to go out and take a look. Farily sure its the same situation.

1. Drain Oil.
2. Disconnect oil pressure sender unit.
3. Place floor jack under transmission, jack up engine.
4. Remove engine mount from pan.
5. Remove pan bolts.
6. Take off pan, wash it out with soap and water.
7. Put RTV on pan (this is your gasket).
8. Reverse procedure.

which?
Which o-rings are you referring to? I'm looking at a diagram of my engines oil structure, and see the oil filter and the only thing I see "below" it is the oil pressure gauge.

theres 2 10mm nuts under the oil filter pedestal that has 2 o-rings that seal it to the block those usually will go out and cause it to leak.. making it appear as if the oil pan was leaking as it drips down the block
