Changing Fuel Pump..Empty or Full Tank??

What time is the safest to change out my fuel pump. I wanna put my walbro in and was just wondering if the amout of fuel in my tank will make any difference in the job. Especially for the safty. Funny how a little thing like burning to death can put you off a job.

Doesn't matter. Just keep ignition sources away, and work in a well ventilated area.

I took out my fuel pump twice, once with the car full of fuel and once with about 1/8th of a tank. For me it was easier with less gas, plus it was less intimadating....... less gas= smaller explosion lol

thats kinda what I was thinking. My tanks almost dry right now so im just going to do it as is.

Its funny, they say that a half empty tank of gas is more explosive because it will have more fumes then a full tank. and since fumes are what ignite. BOOM

PS if any body sees a bald fat guy running down the street in lynnwood WA screaming PUT ME OUT PUT ME OUT.... for the love of dog......put down the camera and put my *** out.

Yea just pretty much touch your chassis with your bare hands before u pull the cover off the tank that the pump assembly attaches to. If you have a static discharge against the car while the cover is off, well thats bad obviously. And yes a 1/4 tank of gas is more dangerous than a full tank. Somewhere in BC at a high school a student was welding near an EMPTY fuel tank a while back. Well, lets just say he blew the whole corner of the school up. Seriously. Liquid gasoline will just burn slowly.

Wrong actually. Less liquid petrol = more petrol vapour = much bigger explosion. Liquid petrol just burns, it only explodes in the movies. Changing the pump when the tank is full is technically safer, but in reality the chance of anything bad happening during a fuel pump change is pretty slim as long as you observe the two obvious safety measures Aaron mentioned. Keep ignition sources away and work in a well ventilated area.

LOL I never said it was right lol....... thats just what made me feel better...... Without all that gas in the tank, I figured most of the fumes would disperse in the air since I did mine outside. But I'm still alive, so it should be ok! I was kinda nervous dealing with the fuel system though...................

you want the tank almost empty, you'll spill less in your hatch.

it doesn't really matter either way though.

make sure you leave the fuel cap off during this process so there is no pressure in the tank.

Well I got it done tuesday. Very easy install and no scar tissue the hardest part was actually cleaning the 18 year old gunk off from around access plate.

I am going to get back in there soon and change out the hoses from the pump, they are pretty bad. I probably shoulda just done them then but I'll get them soon enough.

^+1 I remember dropping the fuel tank in my uncle's old fastback, when I was was about 13 or 14...

Bastard walked up and dropped his (still lit) cigarette in the top opening of the tank... I dropped that puppy faster than gravity would take it.

Nothing happened. The cherry on a cigarette isn't anywhere NEAR hot enough to ignite gas, like it is, by itself, without factoring in many other variables...

Movie stuff, while entertaining, is just movie stuff: Fake.

Eh, it actually is.

Backstory...

16yrs old. I had just lit a small gas fire in a can the clean some of the **** out of it. It burns out, so I go to pour a bit more gas in to dissolve the carbon left over. Well, the can was really hot and so the fuel evaporated into a cloud and started to spread around.

I flicked an ash off my cigarette and got the biggest scare of my life. When that hot ash hit the cloud, all of it spontaneously ignited.

Granted it was fuel vapor and not fumes, but still.

Correct: Fuel vapor that was already warm enough to saturate the air.

LOL. I actually was reading this and found perfectly relevant information:

http://www.answerbag.com/q_view/61765

For the record, I've never heard, seen or known anyone to've caused gas to ignite, via cigarette delivery system.

Little Johnny smoking, while pumping gas?

If the concept of cigarettes lighting gas fumes were 100% valid...

Cigarettes would kill ALOT more people, every year.

Gas Vapours

I have three letters for you. L.E.L. (Lower Explosive limit) Look it up for its definition. More vapour space = higher chance of explosion.
