Changed Damper Now Wont Idle

So i changed out my Pulsation Damper to fix my fuel leak. thats fixed. now it wont idle. lame.

there is a huge improvement though... before the PD change, it would start and rev to 2500 rpm (a little low) and then idle. now, it shoots right to 3k which is perfect. then it hangs there for about 5 seconds, drops to 1500 then dies. starts up fine.

So i need to recheck my vacuum lines and then from there i'm not sure what to look for since it was working fine before I changed anything.

TPS maybe?

Did you replace all the intake gaskets? If not, you probably just created a vacuum leak.

I had the intake gasket with me that i ordered, but i didnt put it on yet. Think thats the problem? If so i can lift up the VDI enough to clean it off and put the new one on.

I also noticed one of my hoses got kinda beat up so i am going to tape that up and see of that helps.

Sounds like a vacuum leak to me, so yeah you should definitely replace that gasket.

i know.

i'm embarrassed. i'm just not completely mechanically inclined so it's a bit of an overwhelming project. and noone in my town will touch an rx7.

chances are, this is what is going on. a vacuum leak all along the intake.

what stopped me from completely removing it was the large vacuum hose on the back of the throttlebody - it was totally stuck and i couldnt get it off.

i will unscrew everything tomorrow and get the gasket on.

reaping the consequences of my lazy-ness

Are you sure that's a vacuum hose you couldn't get off? Sounds to me like that might be a coolant hose. There is a 3/8 hose that comes straight back off the throttle body and bends down to and connects onto a vertical nipple on the top of the engine. It is a bear to get off.

If it has a hose clamp on it, it is a coolant hose. Try this: pick an open end wrench that will fit over the nipple but is smaller than the hose. if you can put it over the nipple, you can tap on it with a hammer and it will slide the hose off much more easily.

I just went thru all this recently for a different reason (cleaned my fuel injectors). If you got the UIM separated from the LIM, you were 95% of the way there to doing it right.

Once the UIM is off (I took off the throttle body, plenum and UIM as a single unit), you can clean up the mating surfaces with gasket remover and a rag, and then clean up any remaining with sandpaper (Mazdatix recommended 300 grit, I used 220 and it seemed to work fine). I used rags to plug the intake openings in the LIM during this to prevent anythning from getting into the engine.

Once both surfaces were smoothed, I applied Permatex #2 to all four mating surfaces (both sides of the new gasket, and the surfaces of the two manifolds). I wanted NO vacuum leaks...

Be very careful when placing the UIM assy down into position, it is easy to get one of the hoses trapped under it, since there are vacuum and coolant hoses coming up literally on all four sides.

I reassembled, tightened it up and put all the hoses and connections back together. Adjust the throttle cable so it is just slack when the pedal is in the idle position.

Take your time, do it right, and you will have NO vacuum leaks.

i took these upper intake manifolds off so many times i think i can take them off in 10 minutes now,

But if your lazy do what i did in 05 when my intake leaked. take some sealent and as the car is running add a tiny bit to where the leak is till the leak stops. or the whistle stops. then shut the car off. let dry and BOOM no leak.

But that was when i was lazy and didnt want to take the car apart

sounds like it was a coolant hose. i had every other hose off but that one. if that one would have come off, i would have been set. ugh. lame. i will get the gasket on today. knowing how to get that hose off means i can pop it off, lean the assembly up at an angle enough to get in there.

<insert venting disclaimer here>

screw this car and my inability tog et a 30 minute job done in 5 f*ckin days. I cant get that dam coolant hose off, and without it gone, nothing will come apart. I can get the bolts off, i can get all the hoses labeled but i cant get it off.

yeah 5 F*CKIN DAYS i have been at this. I'm a reasonably smart guy - so WTH?...

I'm about ready to say screw it all and push the dam car into a lake.

Oh - and whats more - the hoses in the pic attached broke, they are stiff and brittle and i dont know what they do.

Look.

Cut the hose you can't get off and replace it after you have room to work with.

okay. so that coolant hose goes under the VDI where i can see the other end right? If thats the case then cutting it is a good idea.

What about those hoses in the pic? They are only like 6 inches long and were brittle like plastic. What are they for?

Also, when I',m pulling the VDI off, i didnt see in the service manual how to get the throttle cable on the back, and the throttle thing on the front off and detached.

You just unplug the VDI and none of the vacuum hoses should be brittle.

Replace any of them that don't feel at least slightly flexible.

The throttle cable is straight forward. Just unhook the end from the mechanism and it should be loose. It might help to take the rubber washer part loose from the bridge so you have some slack to work with.

Exactly. Cut the hose in half and replace it with a new one from Mazda. You'll have to special order it, so expect a 2 day wait. I don't think auto parts stores sell the proper formed hose for the rear iron/TB connection.

And replace those petrified vacuum hoses at the same time. They'll be adding to your vacuum leak problem as well.

So this is going to sound dumb but how do I replace something from mazda? I don't live even remotely close to a dealer. I will cut that hose, which will let me get the VDI all the way off. I will also remark all my vacuum hoses as i remove them, like i did before.

those petrified hoses - are those just regular from NAPA? I will replace those too.

Overall, i will mark the hoses and unplug them, unscrew the VDI and TB, betach the throttle cable, possibly cut that coolant hose then lift it all up and clean the intake gasket area, place my gasket on there and put it all back together.

lol - sounds simple but i'm sure struggling.

So buy the coolant line from Mazdatrix. They just source 90% of their parts directly from Mazda. And yes, NAPA will sell generic vacuum hose. Almost all of the ones on the car are 3.5-4mm ID (or 1/8" or so in SAE sizes).

Ah, no. That's a radiator hose.

This one: http://www.mazdatrix.com/getprice.as...m=13-680A-N326. Rear housing to throttle body for 86-88 N/A.
