cel.codes 9 and 33. help.

Ok so I read my codes today and got 9 and 33. Im pretty sure its 33. Had 3 long flashes a small.pause and 3 quick.

Where should I.start. im pretty noob but kinda handy. Follow directions good so any help will be appreciated. Its an 89 gxl. Thanks.

Yeah I got that paper. I just need help on where to start, I have no idea on how to diagnose the issue or what to even look for.

HELP!!!, lol

Solenoid Valve (Port Air Bypass) <---- Have no idea what that is or where it is

Water Thermosensor <----- is that the coolant temp sensor or something? should i just replace it?

ok, so i checked out the FSM and saw the #9 was related to the eletric cooling fan, I dont have on i have the clutch fan? is it still the same? and the solenoid valve for #33 im just going to order and try and replace instead of trying to see if it's bad, any idea how much it is?

The solenoid is just for emissions and should not affect the drivability of the car. The electric cooling fan, which is very small, would be located between the radiator and the nose of the car and not between the radiator and engine. The Water Thermosensor is an integral part in the operation of the engine. Check the Emissions section of the S5 and you will find a list of the ECU pins and voltage spec for each pin. You'll need to measure the voltage at the ECU by backprobing the Water Thermosensor ECU pin w/key to on and see if it is range and then start the car up and let it warm up and see if the warm reading of the Thermosensor falls withing spec. On an S4 the voltage reading at the ECU pin would be generally 1 to 3 volts on a cold start and close to .4 volts when fully warm. On an S5 these numbers are a "bit" different. Use the mounting bolt(s) of the ECU as a ground source for the voltmeter.

^^^ thanks, I had no idea there was another fan in front of the rad. i checked on mazdatrix website they have the thermosensor for like 35 bucks so im going to order a new one and for the solenoid i did not see it listed, I sent an email about it. I will still need to fix it so the car can pass inspection. any idea how much one is?

Most of the time a problematic Thermosensor is a result of a wiring/connection snafu rather than the sensor being bad itself so you would be better served to check the voltage of the sensor at the ECU under cold and warm engine conditions. You could also measure the reading for the port solenoid to give you a heads up on what "actually" is the problem.

The port air solenoid is on the outside of the ACV. I've seen a lot of them broken off due to age and heat. It's pretty useless, and you can still pass an emission sniffer test without one, but the CEL is still a problem for S5 cars.

Take a look at the 79-92 ACV picture here: http://www.mazdatrix.com/B-EGR.HTM. The solenoid w/ the black plug, near the air pump connection is the port air solenoid. The other one is the split air solenoid. The S5 ACVs are apparently out of production (they're too expensive anyway), but I think you could probably just pick up an S4 solenoid and swap it on. If the plug is a different shape, switch it out too.
