CDI boxes?

I'm rather confused. These devices produce a stronger spark, am I right? So do they eliminate the stock coils, or do you still use them? Do I need to get aftermarket coils? What's the difference between an MSD 6-AL and a Crane hi-6? I tried searching but I don't really know what i'm looking for since my questions are generic. Thanks!

To your first question, no you do not. They use the stock coils. You cut the signal wires going to the coil and hook them to the CDI, then the output CDI wires go back to the coil. As far as the difference I don't know, I've got the Jacobs Rotary Pack. If you want more info on the install go to www.fc3s.org the how to section under electrical and they have a crane hi-6 install but they all install pretty much the same.

Interesting. so how does that amplify the spark? or does it?

They use some sort of voltage inverter to up the voltage and stores the charge in a capacitator until its needed...

...something like that....

Yeah, it also gets power straight from the battery so my guess would be that it stores a higher charge then stock and releases that when triggered by the stock input.

Its the popular opinion ( at least the ones that I read... ) that running CDI boxes on RX7's is pointless. The idea on a piston engine is that you can get a stronger spark that will allow you to gap your plugs farther.
However, since theres not simple way ( or a real need to ) to gap the plugs on a rotary, its rather pointless.
The stock ignition system is also very strong from what I hear.

Please note this is all just peoples opinions. I have no absolute data to back anything up.
