cause for excessive oil use

The car does not smoke but has used 3 quarts in a month. How could this occur without a leak?

um no.

Its very possible that it is burning oil, oil seals on sides of rotors are worn. Then again, I suspect that its probably your oil pan, leaking just a little bit that you don't see it, but enough that it makes you fill up 3 quarts a month.
If you still have your cats, an oil burning car can sometimes show no signs of it out the exhaust.

have somebody rev it up while you look in the engine bay. a lot of leaks dont leak untill the oil pressure is built up.

How many MILES have you put on it in this month? If you've put 2000-3000 miles on, that's perfectly normal oil burn for a stock engine.
