Catalytic converter

When I bought my car a few years ago, it had an aftermarket main catalytic converter and the stock pre-cats. Because the main cat was clogged I had it replaced by a used stock main cat which was in good condition ( I can't buy any new parts overhere, the local mazda-dealers don't want anything to do with rx-7's. I have to order everything in the united states ) Just recently I have gutted the pre-cats, but performance still isn't up to par. I suspect the main-cat being clogged again.
I want to buy a catco aftermarket cat, because they are fairly cheap so I can afford a new one more often. Does anyone have experience with these cats and is this a good idea.
btw I think that the aftermarket cat that was on my car when I bought it was from catco, but I'm not sure.

Marco.

I'll buy your cat...

Marco in the netherlands,

I was thinking of the same thing, actually that is the reason I came to this thread. I was hoping to find out if the universal 3 way cat's will work fine with my 6port actuators on my '88 13B NA engine.

Does anyone know if the 6port actuator tubes on the stock Mazda Cat's are just the same as the tube on a universal 3-Way Catalytic converter?

p.s. your car looks sweet. Clean, nice rims, what kind of rims are those?

Crossbar,

I'll buy your catalytic converter for $20 if your interested.

The catco's are common name brand...

hi Marco,

I didn't really read your ad very well the first time but now that I read it again I realized that I didn't really answer you question.

Anyways, I have seen catco brand around for quite a while and I think their quality is just as good as any other. Even though it's a direct fit(OEM style) part, I believe they outflow stock converters. It's stainless steel so should hold up decent as far as rusting out goes.

The flanges are not welded to the pipe if you look closely you can see that in the picture, but as long as it's bolted up tight it shouldn't leak. If you want it to be real solid, have the flanges welded.

I have the bonez, I'd recomment it. Supposedly the bonez is designed specifically for the rotary application (TONS of heat) while the catco is a normal cat and will get melted. The pipe isn't for the 6port system at all, it hooks to the airpump to freshen your emissions.

Marco Dude,

Do they have smog requirement in the Netherlands? If not, then just put in a presilencer (straight through), you'll get probly 4 or 5 HP over a catalytic converter and if it's a good quality, it won't burn out like most CATs.

the catco's can't handle the rotary heat. they won't last too long.

True, but on 86-88's, the actuator for the sixports comes off a small line teed into the air pump tube to the cat. You should be able to actuate the sixports this way, with some possible mods to the air pump tube. I was going to do this with my header, as I put a cat on behind it to help clean it up (no flames, I know that it cuts performance...).

Who here has tried the Catco Catalytic converter on a Rotary? Please, hold your hand up. What part of the Catalytic converter is going to melt? It's steel just like every other part of our exhaust. The inside has no fiberglass packing to burn out. So what's going to melt? Are we just succumbing to idea of one rule fits all, based on the fact that most mufflers can't handle the heat of rotary exhaust? or Anything not made specifically for a Rotary won't work on a rotary?

Take the catalytic converter off and put on a straight pipe.

Yes I have been using Catco cats for about 4 years now.Mine have never melted. They start to lose their decontamination capacity after about 40k kms.So basically here in Ontario you can get through the emission test when they are new and a second test 2 years later then it's time for a new
one before the next test.

The best of both worlds is:

a) Buy Catco direct fit Catalytic converter, put it on for smog test.
b) Buy Straight pipe or Presilencer, put it on rest of time you're driving(won't burn out).

Catalytic converter won't wear out for years if you only use it for 1 hour every 2 years for smog test, and straight pipe/silencer should last pretty long too.

hehe, that's my plan. I'm running full RB exhaust now and a week or so before my next emmissions testing I'm just going to go get a cat made for it. and guess what's coming back out the day after
