car wont stay running (back pressure maybe?)

87 TII

My car was running about a month ago. Since then I have taken off the turbo and reinstalled it with heat shields. While at it I took off the acv and split air pipe and made block off plates for those.

I have also taken off the exhaust system and I am in the process of getting a new exhaust. Right now the only exhaust piece on the car is a 3" Thunder Fabrications down pipe and midpipe.

I also got a new TID. This new TID does not have plumbing for the stock bov. So while I am waiting for my Greddy bov to arrive in the mail i just open air vented the stock bov.

THE PROBLEM: When I try to start the car, it will start for about 1 second and then die, like there is a vacuum leak.

What I am thinking is that because I only have a down pipe and midpipe, (just wide open with no cats) there is not enough back pressuse to keep the car running. Could this be right. If not does anyone else have some idea of what might be wrong?

Thanks.
Tim

I would say its a vacuum leak. Maybe you forgot to cap off something when taking off the ACV or maybe your AFM is unplugged or loose.

I am pretty sure I capped everything for the acv. Just 3 lines right?

I will check the connection on the AFM tomorrow. Thanks for the suggestion.

Anyone else know about the exhaust being incomplete?

This is an easy one.

As long as you have the turbocharger bolted on, that is all you NEED for the car to run as far as exhaust goes.

The stock BOV will draw vacuum at idle. It is not strong enough to remain fully closed. Put your hand over the outlet for it and have someone start it. Bet it stays running, provided it hasn't been flooded.

You can put a check valve from a garden hose on the end of the stock BOV to get your car to run properly until your GReddy unit arrives.

I put a check valve on the end of it today and it still would not run. Would it be any different just holding my hand over it.

Did you install it facing the right way?

Pretty sure, I faced it so air can go out but not in.

Double check that TID system - there's a leak somewhere.&nbsp Is the AFM plugged in snugly?

I do not have a filter at all on the end of the AFM, would that affect anything?

I dont think it would but it would be unsafe on a street car. Dont want some debris getting into your engine do you?

Vacuum leak. Either at the TID, or perhaps at your blockoff plate.

This same thing happened to me when I changed my turbo. The connector for the AFM seems to fit when it is upside down. It really doesn't snap on the way it should but is no worse than some other connectors that I have seen. When it is plugged in properly it fits very well and snaps into place.

Mine is a TII and the symptoms were that the car would start and run for about 3 or 4 seconds and then cut out just like the fuel was shut off.

Glad to see that I am not the only bozo!!
