Unhappy car won't start

I am selling my 1987 RX7 non-turbo. The car ran fine. I parked it and put the for sale sign in it. The car sat for about two months. My wife stopped down and started the car and let it run for a little bit. A week later we had someone interested in buying the car. He wanted to hear it run and test drive it. The weather was very cold at this time. The car would not start. It sounded like it was not getting fuel.

I pushed the car inside a heated garage and left it over night because I thought it was fuel line freeze up. The car still would not start. I replaced the fuel pump and filter. It still will not start and it is getting fuel. It will fire and try its best to start. I am getting spark from both coil packs. Does anyone have any suggestions on what to do from here. Possibly change the spark plugs?

Yes, change the spark plugs or clean the existing ones. I've seen this problem alot. Do the sparkplugs, hook up a charger or something to the battery to keep it charged. Put your the gas pedal to the floor and hold it there. Don't stop cranking until it starts. It will start, it will just take a while. Hopefully this works for you.

Why put the gas pedal to the floor? These aren't carborated...its not like with older cars where if you hold down the gas it will help it start, these will just flood. And you will flood the **** out of them if you do that.

Putting the gas pedal to the floor is a GOOD move. I use this myself when I have a hard start, and the original manual recommends it. I've spoken with the dealership as well, and they have people getting their 2003 RX-8's towed because they don't know the trick to clearing the rotary engine if it's been sitting for awhile.

Pressing the pedal all the way to the floor tells the ECU to give NO GAS, but allows the chamber to clear any fuel that may come from a leaky fuel injector. A little fuel leaked in will break some of the seal needed from the oil mixture that is left behind, and the lack of this oil seal will take a car that has GREAT compression and make it have awful compression during the start. My car has compression of 120 psi plus, and this worked after starting the car after sitting for 2 years.

My car starts like clockwork (within one second) when I leave the pedal ALL the way down while you crank the engine in hot or cold weather. However, if you put the pedal partially down, you are not helping, and will likely flood the engine.

The manual recommends not letting the cranking process go more than about 7 seconds, so I wouldn't crank it indefinitely.

I hope this helps, since it was starting well for you before.

Well you have an S5 RX7 which disables the fuel pump when you hold the pedal down. But he has an 87 RX7 which is an S4. All that would do is flood his engine .

Im having the same problems with my new rebuild... I pump the pedal in my s4 when trying to start it but I also installed a fuel cut switch so I can stop it from flooding.
the car would crank, crank, crank, catch, stall. crank catch stall. then she would start right up..
(after about 10 tires)

maybe flooded from a cold start because it wasn't warmed up completely?? remove the egi fuse under the hood and crank the engine for 15 sec or so, reinsert the fuse and start it up?

I changed the spark plugs and did an oil change. I also preformed the unfloding procedure. The car now starts, but will not idle. It will stall when the car attempts to go down to idle speed. It will also stall if you put it in gear. As long as I keep my foot on the accelorater and keep the rpm's around 2000 - 3000 the car stays running. Any suggestions?

Have you adjusted the idle? Might be set too low.

have you sat in the car holding it around 2000rpms for about 2-3mins yet? mine has a hard time starting in the cold but when it starts I have to hold the revs up above 1500 for a couple of minutes until it gets warm...

also listen to J-Rat take it out for a nice drive and I think it will help.

I have the same problem as 87rx7TII, but it should have to do that though. I should start right up and idle... any takes on what it might be?
