Exclamation 7 WON'T GO IN GEAR.. Shifter linkage Problem?

Ok. So my car starts and runs fine. I was driving along the expressway, and when i got to the light, I stopped and i shifted into first, but whichever gear I'm in, the car doesnt do anything. My friend told me it was the linkage of the shifter to the tranny. The clutch doesn't even need to be engaged, and I can put the car into 1,2,3,4,5,R without having an effect on the car's idle.. In fact.. the entire shifter portion doesn't do anything.. So.. where do I start?

Is it the linkage? and if it is.. I might as well just get a Mazdatrix short shifter.. b/c the rubber pieces when i opened up the shifter boot is all ripped up too.. and the shifter has been loose.

TELL ME WHAT TO DO ROTARY GODS

Sounds like an internal linkage problem to me, take a gander into the the FSM to get a better idea of how the linkage works in there. Its been a while since i've had my tail shaft housing off so i cant remeber all that much about it. take out the shifter and see if the shifter ball is still in the cup just for a possible easy fix. Good luck and get back to us with an update.

Sounds like your pressure plate is REALLY busted, or the clutch disk is non-existant...

With the car off, can you hear the tranny gears engaging when you move the shifter through the gears? Is there any resistance at all in the shifter?

the shifter is just non-responsive.. everything works fine except the shifter down.. the clutch disk is fine... so is it just a matter of the shifter being connected with the tranny? and if so.. what should i do?

There are no shifter linkages, per se, there is a shifter rod that goes fron the shifter housing into the tranny. Have you pulled your shifter out? Is it broken in two? How are your shifter bushings?

If it is still in one piece, and the bushings are good, then I suggest downloading the tranny section of the FSM. The problem is internal . It could be a simple as the roll pin has broken or worked out of the socket that the shifter sits in. If not that then it will be internal and will require a teardown.
