car wont hold idle

The car starts and runs for a few seconds then the rpms drop down and the car dies. if you hold the throttle around 1500 it will stay running. As soon as you let off the throttle the car dies. It is a 88 s4 na, completely stock. Any ideas on what could be wrong?

thanks

Sounds like a big vacuum leak and they can be tough to pin down. Check all the obvious places like the vacuum hoses for tight fits at each end and no cracks. Then the gaskets between UIM and TB and the UIM to LIM. You can also develop vacuum leaks at the fuel injectors. Fix the vacuum leak and your problem should go away.

I can't find any vac. leaks, I cleaned the bac valve, put in new spark plugs and replaced the old thermostat and the problem still hasn't went away..

Any other ideas on what this could be?

It really sounds like a vac leak, but if you're sure it's not then the next thing to do is verify the setting and function of the TPS. And make sure your idle speed is correctly set.

I had a similar problem. Turned out to be my injector grommets. Mine were missing, which caused a huge vac leak. Yours may be cracked or worn out which can also cause a leak.
